Default Space Wolves

Hi, My friend finally went to haster hobbies with me to look for a cadian battleforce(see general topic under "friend wants to get in to warhammer 40k") but didn't see one. Then he gazed up at the rack that contains the battleforces and said "I want that one" he was pointing to Space Wolves. After that we went over to my house and started putting the guys together. I know that a battleforce is about 500 pts but he wants to expand to a 1000 pt army. Do you guys have any suggestions to a 1000 pt army for space wolves knowing that he has a SW battleforce(10 Grey hunters, 10 blood claws, 3 bikers, and 1 rhino)?

for starters, 2 HQ's...probably a wolf guard battle leader (with minimum equipment...frost blade and bolt pistol do nicely) and wolf priest or vennie dread and one of the other 2

beyond that, some kind of anti-tank gear...a coupla speeders with multi-meltas or a pred with autocannons and las sponsons works nicely. i wouldn't take scouts until he's trying for 1500. after that, another squad of hunters and another squad of claws, ideally with rhino. that should fill his list out nicely

I just got home from school

Sorry I didn't mention this before but I got him a Command Squad for his birthday. Will this work or should I return it and get him something that is specifically for Space Wolves?

which minis does a command squad have in it again?? (IIRC, it should be useable, and'll probably add some really nifty bits 'n pieces to his army, but i just wanna make totally sure i'm thinking of the right thing)

i'd be ditching the russ for a predator...cheaper, and in general, better

ulrik is a very iffy choice. expensive, and can only be used with your opponents consent

your vennie dread needs smoke and extra armour to really get things done

troops: your claws have to walk. i really don't like that. it gives your opponents ages to annihilate them. i'd have 'em in a rhino (with smoke and extra armour). i'd also lose the power weapon for a power fist (its better in pretty much every way). and the maltagun is a total waste. 50/50 chance of hitting. you might as well buy 'em another power fist.

the bikers: IMO 3 bikers is never a good squad size. too easy to deal with. and there's the same deal with the power weapon

I can tell you right now that any close combat specialist unit that does not have jump packs or a transport be they blood claws or anything else is going to be shot to **** and back. The claws should go in a transport and smoke launchers on it cant hurt. Get em up close and do it fast.

Also have any special characters in any army as an optional insert. They need the opponents consent so rellying on them isnt a good idea. They have their place just keep them as an extra option to use when needed.

I would drop the bikes and bulk up those long fangs. 3 are going to die in seconds. Plus I dont know if you can have a squad of 3...

Anyway the devs have the best anti armor in your list and having only 3 is a problem, as I can see points are tight at 1000 I would drop the bikes and toss in more long fangs and perhaps upgrade the wolf claws sergeant with a power fist.

ok, when your mate playing, he should chuck the lord in with the hunters (he seems to be tooled out in a way that complements them). although a battle leader might be a better choice for this points level

drop one bloodclaw and bung the rune priest in that squad, so he can ride with them in the rhino

the scouts config is pretty useless...1 sniper rifle isn't gonna acheive much. honestly, i'd be leaving the scouts at home for this points level

with the hunters, i'd be using a heavier assault weapon than the flamer...maybe a plasma gun

with the bloodclaws, like i said, i'd drop one, and add 2 power fists instead of the one power weapon. also, the rhino NEEDS smoke launchers and extra armour, otherwise it won't get anywhere

my comments still apply for the bikers...but if your mate is deadset on using 'em, i guess give 'em a go

change the pred ani for a regular predator, and give it lascannon sponsons. it'll be much more efficient at killing s*** that way

and yes, indeed, he can take 3 long fangs...personally, i'm not a big fan of long fangs in a regular wolves army...so i'd be tempted to drop these, and probably sink the points into something else. maybe more grey hunters or bloodclaws (or even more bikers)
