Default whirlwind oreinted dark angels

Hi, I want to start dark Angels, and really think i will, but before I go and spend 300$ i want to know two things:
1.) If a Dark Angel army is capable of holding its own against an army (think of all armies)
whilst using a large amount of whirlwinds in a small battle(500-1000points)
2.) Are There any "normal" HQ's for them, as I went to GWs site and all I saw was special Characters

Thanks for any help

Yes, to the point of being beardy. Their "stubborn" rule is what made me quit playing them.

Just buy characters from the standard Space Marine range, and paint them in Dark Angels colours. Alternatively, buy a blister of "Robed" figures, then use the Commander boxed set to convert them.

hehehe....it is pretty funny when the enemy shoots at a ten man squad the whole game, and at the end, there's a stubborn sergeant and his Heavy weapon sidekick still standing ;D "thanks, guy. You get half points for this tactical squad...that's still kicking out plasma goodness" Even if you don't upgrade to a stubborn sergeant, the "intractable" rule is pretty good for a shooty army.

Yes, DA can take non-special characters. I'd just use the special character models to represent normal captains/librarians/chaplains...just cause the models are so nice...especially zeke!

You might have a little trouble with 3 whirlwinds in 500 points, but 2 should be tenable. I'd suggest a small HQ squad centered on a librarian or chaplain, and two squads of close combat equipped scouts as the core of your army (and the whirlwinds, of course), then, when points permit, change one of the scout squads to a stubborn tactical squad. Don't take a captain, DA doesn't need LD10, due to their "stubborn" and "intractable" special rules.
