Default "somebody keep an eye on him"

The idea here is to create a Wolf army using the minimum amount of dollars. The concept is that 'Lukas' is assigned on a minor mission, and his wolf lord wisely assigns a few grey hunters, and even wolf guard to ensure that he doesn't get too crazy doing his thing. I wanted to make an army that is really cheap (comparatively) that only needs a couple of boxes of wolves, a termie blister, and 2 vehicles, and a few wolves.... working from the bottom up at 1000 points...

Wolf Guard Battle leader: mark of the wulfen, frost axe, storm shield, saga of the hunter, 2 wolves.
180

Lone Wolf: Thunderhammer and Stormshield, 2 wolves
100

Wolf Guard (5)
1 has thunder hammer and storm shield. (he gets assigned to the blood claws)
1 has wolf claw, and combi-melta.(assigned to the grey hunters).
2 have combi plasma.
1 has terminator armor and a cyclone launcher
230

Grey Hunters (5): Razorback, meltagun, powersword
135

Blood claws (9): Rhino (HK missile, extra armor, dozer blade), plasma pistol, powerfist, meltagun, 'trickster' upgrade.

My only input is a fluff point. You said that this is essentially a 'minder' force, in which case it doesn't seem like having a battle leader who is also possibly going to go a bit off the rails in battle makes much sense, thus I'd consider dropping mark of the wulfen from him.

Also, if you use mark of the wulfen you don't get to use the special abilities of the frost axe.

"These attacks are made using the marked models claws and teeth, and hence are not affected by wargear, additional hand weapons and so on"

point taken. I was just trying to fill out the points. I was thinking the battle-leader and the Lone wolf are more like disgruntled for having to deal with the unruly bloodclaw. Hence his last words to his fellow Wolf Guard before going off 'hunting' are "someone keep an eye on him". 'twas meant as sarcasm because its pretty obvious that the trickster isn't going to listen.

They aren't selected to be 'minders' so much as assigned to an army they don't really want to be responsible for the antics of, hence they both go off alone with their wolves on the table.

When the leader is the only one flanking, you know he doesn't want to be there. That's why he left another wolf guard to (allegedly) keep Lukas and his rowdy friends in check. As a side note, do you think the Cyclone launcher terminator with the 2 plasgunner WolfGuard is a good idea for a distant fire base sort of thing? It's wierd to have a single terminator but I understand all wolf guard are individualistic so it may be feasable, just improbable. I figured I would at least make an attempt at some long range support, but still keep my $ figure cost low by only needing 2 boxes, rhino, razor, and a single terminator.

What could I use those Mark-of-wulfen points for in place that would be better? I'm very new to this codex.

It depends whether you prefer the Mark of the Wulfen (i think your explaination sems valid enough to be honest) or the frost axe. You're either getting S5 attacks with two combat weapons or D6+1 rending attacks. Personally I would definately drop the MotW since you get 3 attacks basic, plus 1 for combat weapons giving you four, which is frankly the average roll on D6+1 anyway.

As for what to spend the spare points on a wolf tooth talisman means you will always hit on 3's giving you an edge vs. enemy characters. That would leave you enough points to give the wolf guard you intend for the blood claws melta bombs, giving you a good chance of taking out heavy armour in combat.

good idea tarik. thanks again. now i just gotta drive 50 miles to the store and get some figs to start this thing out.

Do you think it stands a chance though? I'm banking on Lukas, really... and I wonder if its better to put him in a separate, minimal squad of claws, just to be able to take him, get him stuck in and potentially do his stasis thing, and switch the other claws to be grey hunters, switching who goes in what transport. I wonder if it's better to take him with the smallest squad possible, or the biggest. I got a rhino for 10 and a razor for 6... so that's either 5 hunters +WGd in the razor, or 9 +WGd in rhino, and vicey versey with the 6 in the Razor. Hunters are priced the same as claws, and (in my opinion) far better, but since so many points are invested in the Trickster, I wonder which is more effective. He and his Wolf Guard babysitter are really the only threat, so maybe minimize the bloodclaws? or do I want them as a meatshield who I only took so I could take the Trickster? arrrggg indecision....

(modify)
I figured it out. Lukas just tagged along with a few of his drinking buddies, hijacking a razorback for a joyride for glory and mischief. He wasn't even assigned to the boring patrol assignment, just had that itch. This irritated the Wolfguard in charge ('Borg The Surly&#39 who grudgingly left one of his WolfGuard bro's to keep Lukas in check ('Otho The Hammerheader&#39, which is why he and his Lone wolf buddy ('Ulrich The Ultraviolent&#39 wander away from the formation to get stuff done scoping the area, while the Grey Hunters are a solid rock of seriousness, performing their foreward watch duty, erm.. dutifully... Lukas is just out to have a party, and Borg and Ulrich are just off on routine patrol, to get away from the nutbag, hunting with their wolves, assuming nothing will happen. Of course, thats when the badguys show up, right?

I think the combo of Lukas and the wolfguard hammer guy, with a few bloodclaw drinking buddies is a pretty wicked assault unit for taking down BIG things, though.

make the aforementioned changes I suggested I'd...well...suggest, and then leave the rest as is. Even a small group of grey hunters can be a nasty unit in thier own right and the large unit of blood claws/Lukas means that you can be sure to do some serious damage, even with WS3, due to thier 2 extra attacks on the charge. If you can line up a multiple charge then all the better, it'll allow you to tie up multiple enemy units in combat and increase the chance of Lukas going nuclear if that's what you want.

I'd say that's probably fine for a 1k list, it's not all that different from the list I'm running (only I decided to forego vehicles in order to get a 'viking horde' feel). I imagine you should do ok.
