Default The Warriors of Toralis return for 5th Ed. 1500pts

I created a DIY chapter back when the 4th Ed codex was released, but I never really built it. I mean I bought god knows how many models, and some how they just kept going traitor on me and now I have a 2500 Iron Warriors army instead So in the spirit of a new codex, I am attempting once more to resurrect this long neglected project. I kept to the standard codex.

The Warriors of Toralis, 1500pts
HEADQUARTERS 370pts
Gudea Kumarbi, Chapter Master 125pts
Bolt pistol, frag and krak grenades, iron halo
- relic blade
- artificer armour
~170pts

Honor guard squadron 115pts (5)
Eno Elgoni, Champion
- relic blade
4 honor guard
Frag and krak grenades, bolt pistol, boltgun
~200pts

TROOPS 590pts
Tactical squadron 90pts (10)
Sergeant with storm bolter
1 space marine with multi-melta
1 space marine with melta gun
Bolt pistol, frag and krak grenades, boltgun
Transport: drop pod
~220pts

Tactical squadron 90pts (10)
Sergeant with storm bolter, melta bombs
1 space marine with plasma gun
Bolt pistol, frag and krak grenades, boltgun
~195pts

Scout squadron 75pts (10)
Sergeant with power fist
4 scouts with combat blades
4 scouts with sniper rifles
1 scout with heavy bolter
Bolt pistol, frag and krak grenades
= 175pts

FAST ATTACK 235pts
Land speeder storm 50pts
-multi-melta
~65pts

Land speeder squadron (3)
1 landspeeder tornado with multi-melta, heavy bolter
2 landspeeder tornados with heavy bolters, heavy bolters
~190pts

HEAVY SUPPORT 275pts
Vindicator 115pts
Demolisher cannons, storm bolter, smoke launchers, search light
- siege shield
~125pts

Devastator squad 90pts (5)
Sergeant with signum
4 space marines with missile launchers
Bolt pistol, frag and krak grenades
~150pts

It took me a while to get used to the codex. Upon reading it the first time, I was horrified at what they had done with it. But through shear determination (and a look at the pile of $100's in unbuilt models lying around) I read it over and over, until I thought I learned what improvements have been made and how I can use them.

Strategy wise, it's mostly a shooty army that, hopefully, will excel in mid-range fire fights followed by a determined assault/counter assault. I hope for my Drop-podding tactical squad to pop a few tanks/MC's early game and sit tight/take objective afterwords while help arrives. The scout squad will be divided into combat squads, with the Sgt and 4 CC scouts flying in the Land Speeder Storm, again, hoping to take out a tank/MC with the multi-melta and power fist. The other 5 will sit back and hopefully make some valuable enemy units go to ground, though the Avatar and the Ork Mob rule make this a little tricky. With the Land Speeder Tornado's, I saw an opportunity to make a unit that can take on just about anything. Pumping out 15 S5 AP4 and 1 S8 AP1/melta was something too good to miss out on. This will be my harassment unit. Right now I only have two opponents, Orks and Eldar, so I have some really high hopes for these 3 flying killing machines. If need be these guys can also support my DPing (get your mind outta the gutter!) Tactical squad. I'm a little unsure about my second foot slogging tactical squad however. It just didn't seem right to only take one tactical squad, so I threw these guys in there to kind of help back up my Master and Honor guard accompanied by the earthshaking pounding from the Vindicator. The devastators of course hunt down just about anything they please, and will hopefully serve as a great distraction.

Future additions include a Sternguard unit, some terminators, a second HQ (as yet undecided, suggestions welcome!) and some assault marines.

Any advice one how I could tweak this list or even helpful tactics to maximize the list's strengths would be great!

Cheers,
John Snow

I think that your honour guard needs some kind of transport to keep them from being shot to pieces/ignored by a more mobile enemy. I think a captain with a command squad would be better.

As well, your land speeders should be in separate squadrons (and I think that they should have multi-melta/heavy flamer or heavy bolter/missile launcher). Probably should also give the land speeder storm a heavy flamer, as it has BS 3.

Your second tactical squad also doesn't have a free heavy weapon.

The single vindicator seems out of place. It will probably get shut down and never fire more than once per game.

Duly noted. I'll keep this in mind if I ever go up against some more armies. Right now my two friends sorely lack anti-tank fire power. In 1000pt games I can expect to see 4 power klaws, 3 killa kans, 3-5 death koptas, a tankbusta unit (which has failed to take down a vehicle so far) and some loota's from the orks, and against eldar...well....Avatar, Farseer and Warlocks aside (Singing Spears...) my friend just now invested in a single war walker. The orks have always had a terrible time at trying to bring down even my chaos dreadnought (took 3 killa kans followed by a charge from 30 choppa boys, nob with power klaw, which took 3 turns to take down my dreadnought). Granted I am praying to the dice gods to keep up these wonderfully low AP rolls from those orks!!

Against a more balanced/anti-tank specialised army list I will definitely keep those tips in mind!!

If I were to give the Master and his honor guard a transport, what would you suggest and what should I take out? Maybe sub in the vindicator for some rhinos/razorbacks and a beefier Devastator squad?

Cheers,
John Snow
