Default 500pt Combat Patrol: Space Marine Starter Army

I play a Tau army and my buddy I'm trying to get into 40k is interested in starting up a Space Marine army and wanted my help figuring out what to get and how to start an army. So figure I'd introduce him with a small 500pt army using Combat Patrol rules.

Want something that will do well against my Tau, but is still balanced (in case he plays one of my cousins with their various armies). I gave a good read-through of the SM codex, but definately could use some help... how does this list sound?

HQ 1: Captian: 80pts
- Storm Bolter & Power Weapon
- Will start attached to the Tac Squad

[trOOPS]

Troops 1: 6 Tactial Space Marines: 125pts
- 1 Sgt w/Term Honors, Power Weapon & Bolt Pistol
- 1 SM w/Meltagun
- 4 SM w/Bolters

Troops 2: 8 Scouts: 145pts
- 1 Sgt w/Term Honors, Power Weapon & Bolt Pistol
- 1 Scout w/Meltagun
- 6 Scouts w/Bolt Pistol & CCW
- All with Frag Grenades

[HEAVY SUPPORT]

Heavy Support 1: 7 Devastators: 150pts
- 1 Sqt w/Bolt Pistol & CCW
- 3 w/Heavy Bolters
- 3 w/Bolters

[hr]

[size=14pt]Army Total: 500 [/size]

Basic idea is to have the Dev squad provide covering fire while the close combat Scout squad leads the charge with the multi-use Tac Squad on its heels.

Combat Patrol is 400 points....Bump the Storm Bolter on your marshal to a bolt pistol, also.

But he CAN use a 500pts list with the Combat Patrol rules, doesn't he?

In my opinion, I would drop the SB for a BP.

I do understand that the 'standard' combat patrol is 400 points... I'm just choosing to use 500 instead.

So other than dropping the Storm Bolter to a Bolt Pistol for the extra melee attack, any other advice? It's a fairly decent setup? Thanks.

TBH, I wouldn't bother with an HQ mdoel at all. They tend to take up too many points in a marine combat patrol list IMO.

I'd knock the dev squad down to 6 men and get a 4th heavy bolter in there (HB's realy are the best bang for your buck available to marines incombat patrol games IMO).

I'd also look at reducing, or removing the scouts to get another dev squad with missile launchers in there. Add in the trait that allows devs to infiltrate and you'll have a pretty lethal list.

That being said, as an introduction to the army, I see how the choices you've made gove a good overview of marines by incluing as many differant unit types as possible

Scouts can't take Meltaguns, can they?

Missile Launcher or Heavy Bolter are only Heavy Weapon options.

scouts are not an effective enough combat unit

id either take more devis or swap them for marinesand take the infiltrating trait does the job better

also dont take a hq too many points

drop the hq, scout squad and melta in the tac squad

and u can get another devi squad and a landspeeder with assault cannon

theres nothing in the dark angels codex that cant be done better in the space marine codex
