Default Sample Army Lists - Space Marines

Sample Army Lists - Space Marines
The following is a collection is Sample Army lists, which are not intended to be the absolute perfect lists or even represent all the possibilities of the variations that could be created with the Space Marines. This collection of Sample Lists are meant to be a tool to use as a reference point or inspiration for building you own list, or to help in deciding which aspect of the Space Marines better suits you and your style of game play. So keeping that in mind, feel free to browse the Sample Army Lists to get an idea of what all can be done with a few of the categories of possibilities in the Space Marines Codex.

All work on these Sample Lists was done in the Sample Army Lists - Space Marines Work Horse and all final lists were moved here. Please feel free to discuss lists there, or continue to add lists for new categories to be added in the future! Also, please post any corrections or PM them!

Space Marines Balanced; 400 points; Combat Patrol
Preface:

The Combat Patrol rules make it possible to play fast and fun games of Warhammer 40,000 that should take no longer than 40 minutes to complete. Space Marines can pretty much hold their own in CP games, but due to their somewhat high cost, they can be outnumbered or outgunned. Designing a patrol is not something to be taken lightly. When putting together a patrol it is very important to consider the background of the army in question. Although a patrol is a small force it should still reflect the overall character of the army. The original idea of 40K in 40 minutes was to make a game that could be played with the contents of the battle force box sets, which is exactly what I have done. The following Patrol is made from the contents of the Space Marine Battleforce.
Tactical squad - 160 points
- Veteran w/ Power fist and Bolt pistol
- 1 Marine w/ Meltagun
- 6 Marines w/ Bolters

Rhino - 58 points
- Extra armour
- Smoke launchers

Scout squad - 70 points
- 1 Scout w/ Heavy Bolter
- 4 Scouts w/ Bolters

Tactical squad - 110 points
- 1 Marine w/ Missile launcher
- 1 Marine w/ Plasma gun
- 4 Marines w/ Bolters

Total 398 points
Tactical Application:

This is a pretty straightforward Combat patrol list that should give starting Space Marine Captains an idea of how the game works. The 8 men Tactical squad goes in the Rhino for transportation and protection. The squad is geared towards close combat because the Veteran Sergeant is armed with a Power fist that can smash apart the enemies infantry and vehicles alike. The Meltagun is an assault weapon which lets you fire before you charge into action. The Rhino is upgraded with Extra armour and Smoke launchers, these upgrades make the Rhino a tad more surviveable and I would never leave to battle without them for such little points cost. This squad can also be used for objective duties. The Scouts can use their special abilities to get into a good tactical position and use their Heavy Bolter to mow down small infantry. The 6 men Tactical squad is used as a fire-support unit. The missile launcher is a good all-round weapon which is effective against both troops and armour. The Plasma gun has a high strenght and good AP value which is the best weapon against other heavy infantry units and even light armoured vehicles. This squad should sit back and use it firepower.

Space Marines Balanced; 1000 points
Preface:

Playing games at the 1000 points level can feature armies which consist of some standard units like the rudimentary HQ and two Troops choices and some added special units made from the Elites, Fast Attack and Heavy Support options. 1000 points allows for some specialisation and makes a more fun game. I used the models from the Combat patrol list posted above and have expanded it with models from the Space Marines Mega Force. Buying those two boxed sets saves a considerable amount of money than buying the models separately. Now onto the 1000 points list:
[HQ][1]

Commander: Master - 95 points
- Storm Bolter
- Power weapon

[Elites][1]

Dreadnought - 110 points
- Assault Cannon
- Power fist w/ storm bolter
- Extra armour

[Troops][1]

Tactical squad - 160 points
- Veteran w/ Power fist and Bolt pistol
- 1 Marine w/ Meltagun
- 6 Marines w/ Bolters

Rhino - 58 points
- Extra armour
- Smoke launchers

[Troops][2]

Scout squad - 70 points
- 1 Scout w/ Heavy Bolter
- 4 Scouts w/ Bolters

[Troops][3]

Tactical squad - 110 points
- 1 Marine w/ Missile launcher
- 1 Marine w/ Plasma gun
- 4 Marines w/ Bolters

[Troops][4]

Tactical squad - 110 points
- 1 Marine w/ Missile launcher
- 1 Marine w/ Plasma gun
- 4 Marines w/ Bolters

[Fast Attack][1]

Assault squad - 150 points
- Veteran w/ Power fist and Bolt pistol
- 2 Marines w/ Bolt pistols and ccw's
- 2 Marines w/ Plasma pistols and ccw's
- All have Frags and Jump packs

[Heavy Support][1]

Predator Annihilator - 138 points
- TL-Lascannon turret
- Heavy Bolter sponsons
- Extra armour
- Smoke launchers

Total 1001 points
Tactical Application:

This list has 1 HQ choice, 1 Elites choice, 4 Troops choices, 1 Fast Attack choice and 1 Heavy support choice. This list is perfect for playing standard game scenarios and gives the possibility to get used to some more extra and special rules. I tried to create a Balanced and effective list from the models available and I am pretty sure it is up to any game you want. The Master provides the whole army with a mighty Leadership of 10 and combined with the stout characteristics of the Space Marines in general, this army won't be scared at anything the enemy throws at it. He could help the Tactical squad in the Rhino the best with his high weapon skill and suitable equipment. The Dreadnought could easily function as the armies centerpiece, this mighty construct can devastate any target with the Assault Cannon (one of the best in-game weapons) and even when the target survives the shooting onslaught it can crush the target with his Powerfist in close combat. The combat role of the Troops choices remain the same as in the Combat patrol list with the addition of another shooting squad and the Master leading the Rhino Tactical squad. The Assault squad is a bit small to fight effectively one its own and thus should help the tactical squad in the Rhino. The Assault squad can also use it's mobility to go after small fire support squads placed at the back of the board and kill them in close combat. The Predator is your all-round fire-support tank. The Heavy Bolter sponsons allow it to fire on the move and so it should be moving most at the time because that also helps the tank to stay alive longer. The Predator should gun down the more thougher targets.

Space Marines Balanced; 1500 points
Preface:

Most games are played at the 1500 points level, even the tournaments hosted by Games-Workshop. So, this is the points level most people aim for when creating their army. Again the 1000 points list posted above was used to update it to 1500 points. Also, all the models used here are from the Space Marines Battle Force and Mega Force Boxed sets.
- Power weapon
- Terminator Honours

Tactical squad - 160 points

- Extra armour
- Smoke launchers

[Troops][2]

Scout squad - 70 points
- 1 Scout w/ Heavy Bolter
- 4 Scouts w/ Bolters

[Troops][3]

Tactical squad - 110 points
- 1 Marine w/ Missile launcher

- 4 Marines w/ Bolters

[Troops][4]

[Troops][5]

Scout squad - 90 points
- 5 Scouts w/ Sniper rifles

[Fast Attack][1]

Assault squad - 216 points
- Veteran w/ Power fist and Bolt pistol
- 5 Marines w/ Bolt pistols and ccw's

[Heavy Support][1]

Predator Annihilator - 138 points
- TL-Lascannon turret
- Heavy Bolter sponsons
- Extra armour
- Smoke launchers

Total 1500 points
As you can see I have added the following:
Terminator Honours for the Master to give him some more punch in close combat
A Command squad with Transport Rhino
The fifth Troops choice, a scout sniper unit
And 3 extra Assault Marines to make the squad more survivable to shooting.

The Master now joins his own personal Command squad. This squad has a close combat role and it can really dish it out with all the special models in the squad. The Command squad is pretty expensive and should still be handled with care and be backed up by more marines from other units. Also, it is a nice centerpiece and fluffy to use. All the combat roles from the list above also apply here. The Sniper squad can be used to slow down enemy squads and even be used to take on higher thoughness enemy units like Wraithlords and Tyranids creatures. And the three extra assault Marines should keep the squad strong enough when it reaches combat after it might have suffered a few casualties from enemy shooting.
I hope these three lists have helped you in any way with your army and your games!
