Default 1,000pt Ultramarines list

I'm fairly new to the game and have thus far been consistently pasted by my regular opponent. He plays Tau, both static and mech. IIRC my stats are currently:

W: 3
L: 13
T: 1

My tactical-fu is weak, but I'm still learning. I was hoping some of the Emperor's finest could give me some advice, starting with my current list.

I've dropped my Rhinos, as they tend to be rolling sarcophagi. Termies are just too big a points sink for a thousand point army. I was hoping for a mix of shooty and close combat. TIA.

Your tactical-fu may be weak like thin miso but your paint-fu is strong like fresh wasabi!

I still think cheap rhinos are useful if only to give your marines an intial 12" move. Then again, I am mech tau. What do some our SM friends think?

not a bad list but i would drop the veterns and both las cannons
put the points into a decent dev squad

The vets have performed relatively well in the past few games, but only if they can get into close combat. Though I love my Devvies, my Mech Tau opponent sees them and avoids them like the plague during unit placement. They tend to get few opportunities to make back their points cost.

I've used the Assault squad a few times, and like the Vets, they do well IF they can get into CC with the enemy, but with the JsJ units just floating away like ghosts I often wind up in a very bad tactical position. For a while I substituted Speeders and even mounted an Assault Cannon, but the fragility of the Speeder usually means they crash and burn by round 3, latest.

I'll keep trawling the tactica online to see if there are any suggestions that make sense vs. these blue skinned devils.

Try using razorbacks or predators they work quite well agains most things

Ok, just a quick thought, i haven't actually played tau yet but when i've been beaten by an army in the past i've had a look through the enemies army list to see them in black and white. The tau have pretty much all got really bad initiative, so take an army with a dev squad with heavy bolters and a couple of fire support squads 6 man with plas and las like you got already then just take assault troops, elites with bp and ccw and infiltrate, scouts with bp and ccw and infiltrate, assault marines with a chaplain leading them. Take the fight to the enemy and use your devs to take down the squads in cover. Again i haven't played tau so if it all goes horribly wrong i apologise

It's a decent list, it would help if you could tell us what he usually fields in his armies though.

A basic Land Speeder is normally a good choice but I wouldn't use them against Tau with the amount of basic S5 weapons lying around. Change the Vets into a normal unit. Drop 2 Sniper Rifles on your scouts as they will take casualties and it helps to have some cheap models to remove.

With the points add 5 more Marines to the Drop Pod squad and replace the Flamer with a Plasma Gun or Melta Gun. They are then a threat to Battle Suits, Skimmers and more of a threat to large Fire Warrior Squads. They will also be hard to dig out of the enemy battle line with 10 Models in the squad.

I'd drop the Whirlwind too, you don't have enough armour on the table for it to last long in the open and it doesn't cause enough damage to much in the Tau army, especially if his fire warriors are spaced properly. With the remaining points i'd add more Assault Marines to the Assault Squad.

Hmm...Well the likst looks like it has potential, but there is room for improvement.

HQ: Well cant complain here, pretty standard layout for Chappies.

Elites: Well I tend to prefer not using vet squads myself, since I don;t care for the unit, though if I were, I would most likely make it CC oriented, since you can get the shottynes this unit has for a marine less cost. Again, it's just personal taste here.

Troops: Here is where I have some problems. First off you should really find the points to upgrade the flamer squad to a full Tact Squad and either a drop pod or a Rhino for them. They aren't half bad assualters, which is invaluable aganist Tau since they suck at CC. As for the other three squads, I wouldn't touch the las/plas squad, and I happen to play a Scout squad with the setup you have and have had great success with it, though I can see the arugement for dropping 2 rifles and making them regular scouts.

FA: Drop the Land Speeder for 2 more assault marines. I would also find the points for a P-fist here as well. and I may have a good place to get them.

Heavy: Drop the whirlwind. They are relatively good aganist Tau since they ignore the armor save, but you really need to field them in pairs to make them effective. And remember you never need to declare your missile type until you place it on the table.

My opponent likes to mix up his list for fun although he leans more towards MechTau over Static. His list from the last game:

Round one he scrapped my whirlwind, a rhino, one passenger, and most of a scout squad. Dropped my army from 1,000 to 750 and pinned an additional 100 before I even got a chance to move. His Skyray hid behind level 3 terrain and his suits hid behind more level 3 terrain on the opposite sides of the board. My Devs were front and center and completely without targets other than widely spaced firewarriors. By end of round 2 my two speeders were toast as well. After that I conceded the game and concentrated on finishing my beer and Futurama. We may up the game to 1,500 next time, but I'd still like to up my wins at 1,000 first. Thanks for all the input, guys.
