what should i buy first? what should i arm
my guys with first? for fluff, should i arm all
characters (independant and upgraded) with

Try to organize your posts, it is easier to help. First off you need the compulsory two troops and a headquarters. Salamanders are a really flame and melta type chapter. So flamers and melta weapons are good measure. Your next question is a little vague, you really should only have two Ic's, so choose the weapon you think is more effective. In terms of fluff I think salamanders prefer thunder hammers but it is really just your choice to make.

Using creature feature to make salamanders would be a great idea. Just don't take it directly, run the idea over a few people so they can help smooth out the edges.

OK, Glad to see your looking into the Salamanders, they are awesome. I'm no expert, but I'll try my best to help you.

So your first question was asking what you should buy. Well, to answer, here is a list:
1) Space marine codex (unless you already have)
2) Space marine Tactical squad box
2) Space marine Tactical squad box
3) Commander (plastic box.. good for converting and personalizing)

At this point you will have your 2 troops and HQ. Then you will want to write up a list to find out what you want next, and you may want to consider ordering in some thunderhammers, as salamanders love them thunderhammers.

Fluffwise, the Salamanders make good use of some things. Off the top of my hear they are:
-Flamers
-Meltaguns
-Multi-meltas
-Master crafted weapons
-Artificer armour
-Thunder hammers

Now this doesn't mean you have to equip all your characters with a master crafted thunderhammer, combi melta, and artificer armour. You just want to include these weapons in your squads, and using the trait system, you can do this to great effect. (Having a flamer and meltagun in a squad)

Your creature feature idea sounds cool and interesting, you might want to try it out. I don't know how legal the rules are. (were they not made in 3rd edition?)

Now you asked for a starter list. You may want to start using the Combat patrol rules, and get a feel for an army. Now I'm not the best at making army lists, but here's a list that (to me) looks good and fluffy for the Salamanders.

Army Name: Salamanders Combat Patrol

[HQ]

HQ 1: Capitan: 91 points
- Thunder hammer
- Bolt pistol
[ELITES]
[TROOPS]

Troops 1: Tactical squad: 151 Points
- 6 marines with bolters
- 2 marines with flamers

Troops 2: Tactical squad: 160 Points
- 6 marines with Bolters
- 2 marines with meltaguns
[FAST ATTACK]
[HEAVY SUPPORT]
Army Total: 402 Points

This list lets you get a feel for how the Salamanders use Thunder hammers, Melta weapons, and flamers. It's also easy to buy, just two tactical boxes, a commander and a bitz order of a thunderhammer.

Well, I hope this post helps, and I'm glad to see another Salamanders player around.

for the creature feature rules, go to the uk website and go to gaming. it says they need to have your opponents consent or some thing like that.

I'm sure your opponent won't mind if you add some to the game, of they're not then you can always bring them to the next one.

Anywho you could try filing down part of a sprue line to make it round and then maybe craft a couple of round parts for the top part. I'm not sure but I think there is one that comes in a box set somewhere....

For making thunderhammers, you could do what TheCuriousNecromancer said, that would work. You could also use a banner pole and make some kind of head for the hammer. Of course the easiest way is to bitz order, the iron hands thunderhammer, and anointed daemon hammer work quite well.

Also, the box set that comes with multiple thunderhammers would be the Assalt Terminator box. Their may be more I just cannot think of them.
