Default Deathwing Test Scheme

A potential commission client asked me to paint up a deathwing test model, so here he is!
I generally work to a standard where I can realistically finish armies in a matter of weeks, so I dont go all out in the brushskillz but try to choose good colours and charge an amount appropriate to that level of painting.

I toned down the use of green and red to insignia and glowy things like power weapons, I imagine other models would have a bit more than this though. I researched a bunch of deathwing armies and found the ones that used green and red liberally tended to look like christmas pudding :P

+edit+

test model was approved, follow my progress in the modelling diary here:

Wow. Very nice, Waargh. A little colder than I usually see for Deathwing. I can't tell if that is the light source or if you are using a lot of blue in the shading. Nothing at all wrong with that, though. I particularly like the shade you used for the optics.

I definitely think there is room for cold deathwing terminators. Its weird, I never really noticed a model looking "cold", but I can clearly see it, and just never thought of mini in terms of hot and cold colors.

Yeah ive used an aqua and grey mix to shade them. The theme for the army was traditional spacehulk boarders, and I figure the vacuum of space is a chilly place

I quite like the eerieness that it gives them. After all, space is a cold place!
I'd quite like to see you blend your colours a little more, or use more layers in between steps, it really shows up when working with white. But I have to say I do like the chill of the blue wash on your deathwing as it's not something you usually see.
Look forward to seeing more!

Oh, one more thing, I think the red deathwing logo could do with being picked out a little more with one more stage of edged highlights and also the skulls etc are not very contrasting with the colour of the armour, maybe try something a little different? That said it does not detract too much, I would just like to see a little more contrast on those areas.

cheers for the constructive criticism mate, but ive gotta refute a few your points about painting quality with:

roughness is also due to me using my last remaining brush:

Deathwing logo is sloppy i know but should come out fine once i get some new brushes. I like the skulls how they are, and think they contrast an appropriate amount not in tone but certainly in quality of paint - going from matte to metallic, just doesnt come out in photos.

O_O What in the emperor's name do you call that? Some sort of ... nurgle infested toothpick. Hang your head in shame :P
Although the results you get with that ... thing ... are quite impressive
Buy a new one ... Ill even send you one of my older ones if it means you dont paint with that :
Good luck with the rest of the termis.

Time constraints aside, I don't think the Termie is bad, but if I were paying to have an army painted for me I would expect a higher quality than that. I suppose it is all relative as to what you (as the customer) expect to get. For me it would be a higher quality paint job than I would be able to achieve my self. Do you constrain yourself to a certain time limit or is imposed upon you by the customer?

Any way that "thing" you call a brush is disgusting!! I am guessing you make money from painting minis, so having one or two other brushes around probably wouldn't hurt too much. A new Kolinsky Sable will put you back around €2-3 where I am from, I am sure that it wouldn't break the bank. Failing that you could try a brush soap to try and bring a bit of life back into it, but I think that that old girl is too far gone for that ;D

cheers

And I thought I did not take care of my brushes.

The blue look really nice on the bone with the shading and just looks cool. Great now I am thinking of genestealers with the blue shaded bone.

Depends on the job. I work at varying levels of detail as determined by the customer, prices go up or down accordingly - this is my usual midrange level though. Usually people are wanting armies done in a certain time frame for a tournament, for instance I painted a nid army consisting of 2 hivetyrants, 3 magnetised fexes, 3 tyrant guard, 2 zoanthropes, 2 lictors, 32 gaunts, 32 hormagaunts, 32 stealers and 3 objectives in around a month and a half for someone wanting to attend a tourny in Jan. Im adaptable to whatever the customer wants.

that nid army resulted in that brush
