Default Egyptian-themed Tau [IMAGES]

As I was brainstorming color schemes for my army, one of the possibilities I hit upon was blue with gold--and someone mentioned it sounded sort of Egyptian. That opened up lots of ideas--hieroglyphics on the tank armor, interesting conversions, an Ethereal on a palanquin--and after going through a couple of test models I think I've finally hit on what I'm going to use for the rest of the army.

There's still some final work to be done on this one (removing stray flock, touching up places where the paint got rubbed off), but this is about how it'll look.

Really nice!!
the colors are indeed really fitting for Tau, and the deeper blue on the clothes fits perfect, and stands out from the armour just as much needed. The only complain is the brown leather straps ( :) witch should be black IMO
And the the lenses on the helmet!!!! those are fantastic!!!!! really shows that you could paint much better, on characters and stuff, but sticks with a "fast" painted army style.
And a little more highlight could be in order(on the blues and turquoise), but then Im addicted to highlights...

Very nice Catsy! I like the idea of an Egyptian style Tau army to give those Tzeentch boys a run for their money. The "Sept" fits well into the idea of Egyptian life as does the culture and everything. Just think about it and all sorts of fun links can be made. Very cool. Give your Ethereal an Nemes headset and a little beard and he's set!

The colors are good. I think a darker blue may give you a much nicer effect however. The gemstones are very nice!
Other than that, maybe try and smooth out your metalics? Are you doing them on a base of black?

For gold, I'd recommend: Black base, red coat, metalic gold color of choice, 2nd coat of metallic gold color of choice. It should really bring out the gold and look fantastic. And if you want it to not shine too much but keep that grim gold look, then a chestnut brown inkwash over the gold areas will be great.

Very nice scheme! I'd love to steal it if only I could bring myself to put metallic on Tau and I hadn't already went Police!

Great idea, great paint job!

The Tau have always struck me more of a middle eastern type culture rather than Japanese as some suggest (guess it's the anime style suits)

I'd go with the lighter blue, as it more in keeping with the color of egyptian scarabs amulets, though to be honest, they not only used the turquiose color, they used the deep blues and scarlet reds as well. I'd even consider maybe a desert sand color scheme for the shas'la's, and reserve the gold for the 'ui's and 'els...?

anyways...just a thought. great work...can't wait to see some army shots...!

The lens is amazing.
The painting is really good and what a great idea.

The only thing I might even try to offer is what about making the shoulder emblem to be painted in a bright green like a scarab?

That would be an idea?

Really cool cant wait to see what else you come up with.

Interesting. I'll have to think about it; admittedly I was ambivalent about how the straps turned out, but left it like that for now until I get a better idea. I'll try the black next time.

Thanks for the vote of confidence. But actually, this is only about my fourth or fifth mini (see here and here, and for my /very/ first mini--two months ago--here). I just feel like I'm learning a lot with every one.

I just bought myself a jeweler's magnifier vise. I recommend this unreservedly to anyone whose hands shake like mine. You can pick one up for $10-15 at hobby stores, and they're basically a poseable magnifying glass with equally poseable alligator clips.

I agree. I tried a lot of layering highlights with good success on the aforelinked Adol mini, but I wanted something I could reproduce easily on twenty-odd fire warriors. I'll save the uber detail for my Hammerfish and CSuits.

What clinched the deal for me was discovering Tomb Kings. I Ebayed about thirty back issues of WD a few weeks ago, and I've been devouring all the ideas therein. The Tomb Kings' fluff colors were almost exactly what I was thinking of, so I've been looking at a lot of TK articles for inspiration.

I was planning to do exactly that with my Ethereal. Am also in the process of scratchbuilding him a Tau-ish "hover" palanquin. Have yet to decide on how I want it to end up looking, though; I may use what I have so far as a base for something else.

The fluff for this army is actually kind of interesting. They're from an off-shoot of the Dal'yth sept, garrisoned on a human world left behind in the Damocles Crusade. The world had regressed somewhat and over the millenia had fallen into ancient cultural patterns. The Dal'yth assigned to this world, being the way they are, adopted many of the motifs and customs of their host world.

I thought about that. The underclothes are Vallejo Imperial Blue (about the same as Regal Blue, I think--all my colors are Vallejo unless noted otherwise) with a darker wash and some highlights. I considered adding a drop of black to the mix, but when I tried it I didn't like the way it looked. The turquoise is used for off-panel accents.

I was actually proud of this. Primed black. Basecoat of Scorched Brown. Next I painted over that with a 5:1:1 mix of Scorched Brown, Plague Brown, and Glorious Gold. Then I gave that a heavy (but very thin) wash of equal parts GW Flesh Wash and Black Ink. I /love/ the way that ended up looking. I then added a layer of thin Glorious Gold, and highlighted with a 6:1 mix of Glorious Gold and GW Mithril Silver.

Unfortunately, it ended up a bit thick--I just switched from brush cleaner to a mix of Liquitex extender and flow enhancer for thinning, and I'm still getting used to the proportions I need to achieve good results.

That Police scheme is awesome. :> Admittedly I had reservations about using metallics--I like the way they look for effects but not usually in large amounts. However, once I'd decided on the Egyptian look the gold was just mandatory.

That thought occurred to me. It'd certainly save on my metallics. I think part of what tipped me towards gold for everyone is that a sandy color with the blue would just be too similar to the Codex T'au colors--and I don't really like them.

Possibly. Might be pushing the boundaries of too diverse a color scheme, though.

Incidentally, ever noticed how much the Tau homeworld symbol looks like a scarab? I plan to make good use of that.

Thanks for all the feedback and comments, everyone. I'll put up more pics as I have them. And now that I've got the color scheme pretty much settled, I can start putting together my Hammerfish and CSes too.
