Default first Painted Tau (pic heavy) Update new pictures!!

Well you may have seen an early post by me with a painted tau battle suit but my freind did a lot of that one for me so without further adieu my first fully painted by me firewarrior

I havent been painting long just fooled around with some dark eldar mostly so tell me what you think.
Sorry to be needy but I really want ton know if it's any good and if I should employ a different technech before I start my next one, which I really want to do.

Well I touched him up and then got some more done Please tell me what you think of them the only other person I can ask is my mom!!

P.S. my digital camera is kind of wonky so colors are a little off and in some places the images are corrupt but you can see the important bits I hope :-\

Alright - lookin' good for your first tau!

I think the models look pretty flat. This means that there's not a lot of depth to them. I think they would look tons better if you highlighted them. If you don't know what highlighting is: Highlighting is painting over all of the edges and raised surfaces in a lighter color (to symbolise light hitting the model)
Also, they would look better if you ran black down all of the creases in the weapons and legs and other little "slits" in the armor.

One more thing is that you should water down your paints a little (or not use as much paint) because it is pretty thick in some places, and, especially with a "clean" army like tau, thick paint is a no no

Much better than my first tau, I have to say... Keep it up!

Water down your paint. The models aren't bad for your first ones but like 1shot1kill said there are easy things you can do to fix them up. Also consider trimming down the mold lines, they seem to be especially bad on the tau for some reason( at least on the ones I own).

I use a hobby knife and carefully shave down the mold lines for plastic. For pewter I use a file.

How I water down my paint is simply get a bit of paint on the brush and quick it a quick dip in my water cup. If I only need a little water I just barely put the tip of the brush in, if I need it really watered down I give it a good dip.

Just search highlighting here or check out the painting guides on a site like coolominiornot.com.

Very good for your first Tau, the way I water my paint is by dipping my brush into the water, then I run my fingers across the brush, and then with my own judgement remove any excess water and make sure it's just right.

I water down my paints differently than both of you
I find this the most efficient as well (but different people have different methods that work best for them)

I get a big blob o' paint on my brush (careful to keep the pain on the bristles of the brush only - I learned the hard way that getting paint on the metal part and the handle really screws it up) and then put it on a pallet/plastic/anything that'll hold paint without soaking it up (newspaper = bad, it absorbs all the liquid)
Then I just dip my brush in water, dab a little of it off and mix it in with the rest of my paint. Voila - thin(er) paint!

Watering down paints makes models look ALOT BETTER. I have not been painting for long but right when I started using watered down paints my miniatures looked probally 50% better

You can also thin paint with future floor wax for translucent effects.
