Default Fortress elite test model - please comment!

These pictures are of a model of my so-called 'fortress elite', two units will form the armoured fist squads of my army. Basically I want to know what you guys think of him before I paint another 19 (I promise the bases of the other ones will be a little more interesting! With rocks, rubble, some static grass...)

Thanks!

I agree with Nightmare, the uniform could use another coat of highlights (or a darker basecoat) and the brown on the rifle definitely need more attention.

Other than that, I'd be happy to field a unit like this -the face is really impressive!

I like everything but the brown on the rifle.

Two things about it that I think you should change;

1) The colour is to flat, it needs some highlighting.

2) What colour brown is that and what colour is the coat?
It looks like it might be snakebite leather and the grey looks like shadow grey. Those colours don't really go well together. Personally I'd make the gun casing black with grey highlights. If you're set on using brown I'd lighten it up, maybe try using some komando khaki to make it look like a lighter coloured type of wood.

Just my $.02

Boy, that guy looks angry!

Not bad at all, mate. If he were an independant character, I too would suggest improving the highlighting/shading, just as the other fellas have mentioned. But I don't think you should concentrate too hard every model in a gaggle of twenty nearly identical soldiers...you'll over-exert yourself and get real sick of painting/modelling, real fast.

By all means take on board what the fellas are saying, because it'll help when you come to paint those leader types, but I think this guy is a perfectly good template for a guardsman.

Good point, Tom!
It's far too easy to start wishing for that Character paint job and completely miss the real issue at hand; is this model ready for the table top?

It most definitely is, and I really want to see the whole bunch as soon as you can have them ready for us!

I'm afraid the colour of the lasgun is pretty much set.. Most of the fortress elite uses the same Phyllis Mk III lasrifle as the rest of the army, but a few carry the new Purda Mk 6 lasrifle (black stock, sickle magazine), so painting the stock black or wood grain would ruin the effect that some of the troopers carry improved lasguns.. :-\ Doesn't mean I shouldn't lighten up the stock a bit, it does look a bit plain indeed.

I used Bestial brown and codex grey, though both have been mixed a bit. The picture makes both a bit more plain than they are in real life, but I'll take your advice and lighten it up a bit.

Guess that's why he looks so angry

Well, lighting up the brown a bit and adding a few highlights shouldn't take much time at all, so at least I'll do that on the next models.

If school work doesn't come 'n bite me in the ass, I'm hoping to have the first unit + chimera finished within the week.

Thanks for all the comments so far!

I love the paint job on them Terra's Guard but the models face (which you did very well) is butt ugly. Only thing I don't like about it, every thing else about it is beautiful

I think it is a good model overall just needs some highlights.
