Default Stankov's Stuff [Commissars, Raven Guard, other showcase models] 19 Pics

Well, heres what I've been working on the last few weeks. I still have yet to be happy with my table enough to post pics...I'll get more work done this month though, and hopefully get some pics.

Please Rate overall painting skill 1-10, please! Thanks!

Anyways, I will start with a Commissar I did yesterday after seeing Komrad's amazing Commissar Trio.

Note the NMM, and tell me if it looks remotely what it should look like. Thanks.

Commissar #2

Pre-Heresy Thousand Sons Marine on Scenic Base

Stankov updated with Urban Base

Showcase 9th PDF Trooper with Sniper Rifle and Melta Bomb

Raven Guard Tactical Squad, 2 models with NMM

Remember, please rate 1-10.

Thanks!
Stankov

Instead of rating your minis I will give you a few good pieces of advice.
  • Get a magnifying lamp that you can clamp onto your desk. Your local non GW hobby store would have one.
  • Use more layers(on everything!)!!!!! At least three. Your recipes are not bad, you just need to use at least on more layer on them.(A lighter grey on your greys, a lighter red on your reds, a lighter layer on your faces...)
  • No offence, but your NMM is horrible. Why don't you try to master metallic paints before you venture into NMM.
  • Blacklining! Your doing good in this area for the most part, you just need to clean up a few things in this area a tad more.
  • Water down your paints! Way too chunky man

Your really quite a good painter. There is just a few things that you need to work on is all.

this may be harsh,..........

In order of model:
8/10
work on the bolter and chest
7/10
work on again the gun, and the face, it looks like he has 100 sitz.
6-7, 6.5?/10*
it ooks good with a glance but more you look the more mistakes:
the hand holding the bolter needs to be worked on as does the whole arm infact it's not bad but it could use a little more paint. the silver needs to be a little neater, its running over the red in some places, also the symbol on the gernade holding hand could use a bit more.
5-6/10
c'mon i know you can paint better. the face looks like a brown blob, the hand holding the axe could use a little re-do, it's to glooped. the silver again needs work, most on his gut guard, and the axe handle. (the axe blade looks fab though!) The caps red is akward, you could say it's has to meuch un even paint, it looks bubbley. just try to re-do his head region. (face, cap, beard......)
8/10
I like him.....just need to work on the gun and face, and the left chest pad looks un evenly painted.
9/10
very good, just a few small mistakes.

*I like him but as i said he looks good if you just scan over him for a while. You can eventually see numorus lazy mistakes that is not usually shown in your later work. Though I do like the base the head, and the pose looks cool.

General Dakari: Thanks for the compliments, man... You must be being very generous... 7's and 8's are much more than I would expect! Thanks, it's always nice to know guys appreciate my work, shoddy as it may be As far as not liking the Stankov model, no offence taken! I often dislike the centrepeice of someone's army, and this is by no means my centrepeice!
The sniper rifle is based off a modern hunting rifle. I hate 40k scopes, so I GSed my own The wood grain looks much better in good light, though.

Tom: Thanks for honesty! It's a compliment coming from you, though... To be anywhere near Tom's level is to be anywhere near godly
You like the Chaplain better? Hmm... Really? I would have thought the Commissar would have trumped him. But, then again, your a devout Marine player, so... No wonder the two Space Marine model groups got 7's Thanks, man.

Pirate: Don't worry, man. I appreciate you helping me out!
I do take a certain pride in my blacklining. Afterall, it's about the only thing going for me
My NMM looks bad? Hmm... Guess I'll go back to metallics, then. I never really got it right... so... I'll try highlighting metallics instead of NMM.
The paint looks chunky primarily because 90% of these models were done in a different scheme before hand. I simply re-sprayed them [My paint stripper is pretty potent... I don't use it unless thinsg are getting REALLY thick.]
You think I need a magnifying lamp? Hmm... I was going to buy one for tying flies, so I will look into that. I know it would help a lot!

Azr9: Not harsh at all!

I know, my NMM needs serious work!

Acne? Where? I hope he doesn't look Nurgly!

Hmm... I painted this fella about at Christmas time with a bad brush and even worse skill... I think he is in need of a little clean-up!

I know, I painted him a while back too I just added the base. I think you may be confusing his brown blob face with his moustache. So I guess I need to highlight, right?

The left chest pad is actually distorted by a lump of glue. Its a recycled chest, and the glue leaked from the shoulder to the lower arm, and when I took the arm off, it left some glue there that I was ignorant too. After painting, I realized it was there, but I'm a little hesitant to take it off.

Thanks. I really put a lot of work into them, I want them to look nice.

Thanks everyone. What you all said is much better than a simple 'Hey, nice models'. Thank you all very much!

No problem homeboi.

I give you my word that if you do everything I suggested you will become at least three times better.

I got better as soon as I started using my MG.

Go and put more layers on your little dudes. Take a few that you don't really need if you don't trust yourself yet, and put at least one more layer on the mini(s). Seriously man, you won't be sorry.

I need to go do HW now, cheers doods!

Gen. Dakari: Meh, I'd probably say the same if I saw your models. You're modest though, which is probably one of the best charecteristics of a man.

Pirate: True, I can attest that my models started looking great once I started using 2 or 3 colors per color [?]. Really, they look much more realistic and life-like.

Thanks for the tips!

Mhmm, I agree with the scores of Dakari, just maybe not the comments.

Personally I like the NMM, you've gotten better at it, good job! keep it up and you'll be doing it perfectly soon.

Plus, cool bases you got going on their. -thumbs up-

Thanks! I've been disappointed I haven't found the motivation to base my armies, so I put all that effort into just 3 or 4 really nice bases I think they help a model stand out, especially when it makes them elevated from normal troops.

I guess the NMM might work, but I think I'll use metallics for now and go back to the test runs.

Thanks!
