Well, here it is (copy/pasted from another forum :P)
It's not an insult. An Italian bus driver was trying to get to me on teh phone for a mate via the bus monitor, and he didn't speak a word of English, so he figured that 'Pollo' was closer to 'Paul' than anything else. Kinda stuck.

In case you're wondering, I lived in Italy for 3 years.
