Default Looking for tips on how to run an RP

So I've decided that I'm going to try to run a Rogue Trader game with some of my friends. Only problem is that I've never done too much with RPs before, and I want to make things run smoothly. So I was wondering in anybody with GMing experience could give me some tips on do's and don'ts for running a game. Thanks in advance!

(If this would be better in the Enclave itself feel free to move it mods.)

Do you mean us guys from Gryphon Gaming? Or did you go off and make some fancy new college friends?

Off the top of my head, here's a few:

Have an Adventure tree.
(Have a skeleton of your adventure with box and link between each other them, allowing the adventure to move like a flow chart)

Don't railroad to much
(nothing player hate more then having 0 choice)

Make yourself a rule cheatsheet
(Nothing kills a mood more then a DM flipping through a book for a small important rule

Don't sweat
(Your player will find way to confuse you to no end with creative idea you haven't thought about: role with it and Ad Lib)

I'm going to throw in my lot with Odo, I want to run a Star Trek RPG, but I don't know what I'm doing. Thanks for the tips Boner, I'm using them as we speak.

Get yourself a copy of XDM.

Seriously though, as Boneguard said, an adventure tree is golden, just prune it back when it gets too big.

If your players attempt to rules-lawyer, pull some fast-talking BS about a new supplement that fixes that issue, then continue.

And if anything gets in the way of both having fun and telling a good story (Dice, Rules, Players) throw it out until the fun resumes.

There's one thing and only one thing a player loves above all else: phat loots. No matter what they say. No matter what they do. No matter how knightly they are. They all love phat loots. Phat loots are an important incentive. Use it.

Ya Odo, I'd like to play, when is it going down?
I'll tell the others at school tomorrow.

As a tip, in my experience it's better to build up slowly and err on the side of too easy than too hard, nothing will make our group want to quit more than having a Green Slime equivilant dropped on our heads after we learn the game

I'll PM you the details on it, that way you can be brought up to speed quickly.

Thank you everyone for the tips.

I'm planning on running (for those that are familiar with RT) the Into the Maw beginner scenario. The only problem is that I've looked at other forums (Dark Reign and the Fantasy Filght Forums) and people have said that there can be various pitfalls (shooting a re-occuring character for example). So the question is what do you suggest for avoiding facepalm scenario breaking (intentionally or unintentionally) by the players without seeming to railroad?

Deus Ex Machina.

So they shoot a re-occuring character, have it fall in an inaccessible place or make it such that enemy are coming and they cannot verify if he's truly dead.

Be familiar with the potential pitfall and find way around them, look at them and ask yourself:
What if the player do X (or don't do X)? How can I get around it?
