Default 'I respect your opinion' versus 'I think you're wrong'

The title shows two opposite attitudes. One attitude involves toleration and respect, always respecting someone's view even if you don't believe it yourself. The other involves effective conflict - where you are standing up for what you believe in and are saying that someone else is wrong.

Which one, if any, of these attitudes do you think is better?

Respecting someone's opinion is all well and good... except when it is blatantly wrong.

For example, if someone started saying he believed the world was flat, we would not respect his opinion.

But how do you define when someone is blatantly wrong? Centuries ago, people thought that scientists who said that the world was round were blatantly wrong. After all, we can see that the world is flat....

When somebody is wrong, there is evidence to prove they are wrong.

Hence, post evidence to prove it.

Do you have first hand evidence that you yourself has witnessed that the world is round?

Personally, I like to keep an open mind.

I prefer to respect where they're coming from, and how they got the opinon, unless it's extremist and/or wrong. Then I'll merely point out what I think is wrong, using what I percive as evidence ,bearing in mind extremists don't belive in evidence that isn't theirs, wheeas a moderate will simply give a logical and balanced counter-point: take the religion thread here. People steered a bit close to the wind on occasion, but generally there were logical points-counterpoints discussions going on there that enlightened both sides further into understanding the other opinions.. I'm all for the freedom of ones opinion, except where people are either using blatant lies for personal gain, not using the full information, or have been otherwise duped into extremism. To be 100% free will not work, I'm afriad, becuase that means extremism , racism, and bigotry aretheoretically unchecked becuase it's their freedom of speech. And we all know that extremists are quite happy to abuse systems they don't respect for personal gain if the systems have no means of halting them...

i think that one can respect ther views of others whilst telling them that they may be incorrect. like if someone said that the sky was grey, you could assume he was colorblind and break the news gently to him/her

yes I do.* I also keep an open mind, but years of training have left me with a command voice in speech and writing.* I make active rather than passive statements in print; since emotional content cannot be ascribed in print by most people, then it is up to the reader to place the context.* this is how most misunderstandings happen on the web.* For example, below is the same POV stated different ways:

a-hole remark:* I think dark eldar suck!

Active statement:* While effective in the right hands, dark eldar require much close tactical supervision in order to pull off a victory.

Passive statement:* Dark eldar are not my first choice in armies, since playing them might be beyond my ability to effectively maintain a plan in order to be competitive.
