Default Internet Kill Switch

http://news.cnet.com/8301-13578_3-20007418-38.html

So basically US senator Joe Lieberman wants the US President to have an "Internet Kill Switch" that can be activated at the president's discretion. Is this a violation of freedom? Is this a necessary evil?

Personally I know if it was ever used I'd get myself killed doing something rash trying to get it back on.

...why? Is the president going to turn off the internet for lulz periodically?

But yeah, that's a real violation of freedoms.

My question: Is it possible? Last time I've checked, not every major internet backbone is located in the US.

No it would be localised. But there are a small number of major 'hubs' that if shut down would render a lot of people off-line.

Since when did the internet belong to Obama?

The bill would require all US ISPs, internet hubs, and whatnot to all connect to this kill switch. So it would make it possible. Yes, the internet outside the US would still function. If the US internet went down however, it would still be quite crippling to the internet as a whole. For instance, Simple Machine Forums, Tau Online's host site, is located in Tucson AZ (so no TO).

To be fair we have the Digital Economy Bill which is, in my opinion, much worse as the governemtn can permanently stop your internet at any location and, as it is the government, can follow you round the country shutting it off wherever you go.

I don't know, but this seems rather... Pointless? I don't see the need or desire for a country so liberal (and I use that term when I compare to places such as North Korea) as the U.S.A. to have such a device, I mean, when is Obama ever going to use it without: a) being force out of office one way or another or b) instigating a coup. :P I don't know if this is right but I assume the internet is a priveledge not a right anyway, so it really won't that much of a political difference (theoretically, of course it will in the real world) either way.

Pretty easy to answer....since he is the messiah after all everything belongs to him....

Anyhow this is most troubling. I would expect this kind of shit in china, but here....wtf? There are other ways to protect our internet assests rather than just pulling the plug. However this is about more than secruity...should this pass they could use it for far more that "protecting" us even though its waht they will call it.

Lieberman says it's going to stop internet terrorism. Does this mean the government is going after Anonymous? They ARE hackers on steroids after all.

I doubt it be very effective at stopping hackers...but on the same note hackers could become more annoying. "OMG! someone is trying to hack the DoD (for the 30th time today)! Push the turn off internet button!"
