He was the messiah, but then he handled the BP spill like a tantruming, retarded child, and lost all respect I had for him as a politician, and as a human being with a functional brain.

Does this mean the government is going after Anonymous? They ARE hackers on steroids after all.
Let them try. I'd bet on Anon any day of the week.

Did anyone check to see if this power was actually something he asked for? Before going off on various rants?

That said, I think this is a bad idea. If a system has the ability to cut off internet access for massive sectors of the population, it is itself going to be an ideal target for attack. I think it is very important for the public sector to be able to isolate sensitive systems from the internet as a whole very efficiently. But I don't think there is anything to be gained from protecting the private sector that way. Let the software companies handle it.

Also.... think of businesses that run based off the internet. It's not like its only going to be 'Oh no, obama turned off my porn!'

After a little bit of checking:

As such, the bill was declined the Obama administration’s endorsement in the hearing. Instead, the deputy suggested that the current Section 706 of Communications Act should be used as a foundation for revisions in the law, as opposed to the creation of a new one.
So I think this is more about Leiberman being a bit old, and not having the clearest concept of how the internet works or what it is used for. So I am not too worried about this bill going anywhere. It is going to be difficult to pass a bill granting the executive branch emergency powers that it doesn't actually want.

And here I was expecting six months down the line to hear Obama had been murdered and 4chan was running America... :

So it's a dumb motion made by Lieberman and doesn't have Obama's support. And it's probably not going anywhere. You guys are a little quick to accuse the man there.

Also, Eric, I'd rather not see wishes of presidential assassination in here. Thanks.

To be fair I never said anything about what Obama wants. I said things about what Lieberman wants. I didn't really think the bill would pass even one house, and I fully expected Obama to veto if it did. The point is that the idea is out there, and it was proposed by a fairly intelligent (if eccentric) senator.

It was more a joke about the 4chan thing, so my bad if it was taken as an assasination manifesto. As much as i dislike him i have no want for him to die, cause then we would be stuck with Biden and well......face palm.

To be honest I had seen this before elsewhere. It sounds like what it's suppose to be is the there to counter the equiviment of a nuke in cyberspace. It's a scenario I've heard of before, someone launching a mega-virus or some sort of multi-front hacker attack where it would be as bad as if the net for a whole country's internet went down. Course, like a real bomb it wouldn't be that neat and just hit the intended target.

It could be bad, but probably not enough for a kill switch to be a solution. One, if that is happening ISPs and others would be moving to shut off what they can and contain it all on thier own. Two, while it would cause a loss of revenue as everything effect was brought off-line, wiped and had backups or new images loaded, but companies plan for that. In short, there are measures in place that are not this drastic so this really would be more of an overkill switch.
