Hey all,
I was looking at the flame threads on Yahoo that were pertinent to some of Mr. Cosby's now fame-gathering remarks about how minorities (mainly Blacks) in America need to stop pointing their fingers at the white man and do something about their situations. (Consequently, I agree and quote: "Every time you point your finger at someone, remember that there are three fingers pointing right back at you...") Anyway, someone on the board shouted "Cosby for President!" At first, I laughed. Then I thought about it for a while. It's not so funny... Pro Cosby 1) He's got no "established political persona". This means no ties to keep with those in power. 2) His money is self-made, not inherited from slavery money or oil money. This means he was poor once, and may remember how difficult it was then. 3) His lack of political experience may be exactly what this country needs: Decisions based on honest forethought, rather than bipartisan jockeying and wallet-padding. 4) Americans, as a general rule, really like Bill. 5) 3P Appeal. "Presidential Pudding Pops". (OK, just kidding on that one) 6) He's used to the cameras and the limelight. He's an eloquent speaker, self educated, and kind-hearted. Not likely to be extreme in either direction (not Hawkish or Dovish) 7) The fact that he's not white might lend more credibility to America's "land of the free" and equality propaganda. Especially in countries that still think we American blacks are oppressed by sweaty redneck cops - LOL Against Cosby: 1) No political experience. Could spell disaster. 2) With a background in comedy, some might be tempted not to take him seriously. 3) Has a few "questionable moments" in his past. (What politician doesn't?) 4) He's not white - Hahahaha! 5) There is a social-political disconnect between Bill and the so-called Black Community. He's rich... we're not... Can we trust him? (Not my sentiment, but I've heard it often enough...) I personally feel that I would vote for him if he ran. His cons are no worse than most, and his pros are refreshing. Besides, I think the checks and balances already in place in our gov't are enough to circumvent most of his would-be mistakes due to a lack of political savvy. Lastly, I think the people of my country should consider one thing: No matter who we elect as our next "CEO", we need to remember that politics is a chess game in which we are all pawns - even the President. I think it would be a good idea to find a King that remembers that it is, in fact, still a Pawn... albeit, with a crown. So what do you guys think? |

i have to agree, while the guy has no political experience, he is easily the most respected African American, IMO. He is a great guy and has pointed out some key issues dealing with poverty. Not sure about president but maybe some political position...

I'd love to see it happen, though extremely doubtful. Someone should email this thread to him.

I can see it now...
INTERVIEW WITH BILL CROSBY Interviewer: "Mr Crosby, why should the American People vote for you?" Bill: "Three reasons. 1) I'm not going to pretend God told me to be President like Bush. 2) I'm not going to rig the election like Bush. 3) I'm not George Bush." Interviewer: "Best argument I've ever heard! Crosby for President!"

) Bill Cosby (all of the reasons above), Colin Powell (he would have won had he run before) , James earl Jones (oh come have you heard his voice ;D ) , Morgan Freeman (Brilliant, awesome commanding voice, Well-educated, unbiased) Those where just a few that made our top ten list lol. Funny how many people have given this idea thought. |

That's great, except his last name is Cosby.

Haha!
But seriously, folks, what's with the whole English Language versus "American Language" animosity? You don't see Folks in China talking crap about the differences between their dialects, do you? Languages are like symbiont virii. They are "caught" by people and it changes them. They change it also, by adding slangs, incorporating words from other tongues, etc. This repeats throughout the ages. If languages are not to be altered, my dear web-friend, Wargamer, then why are we not still speaking the "dead languages"? Does not the English language therefore owe fealty to older Teutonic and Saxon tongues? Anyway... back on topic: More importantly than just WHO runs for President in the USA, I have no choice but to consider WHAT runs. So I'm gonna add a quick poll to the top of the thread

my vote goes to condoleeza rice, despite the fact that im a sexist a--. the only problem i see with her is i dont think she(and with bill crosby) has the guts to handle it. being president of the USA(espeically during a war) is alot of pressure and responsabilty. i dont think any of these people would be able to deal with it. while being a celebrity does come with demands and stress it is not nearly the same(a differen't kind of stress you might say). but if she did become president not only would it be a black person, but also the first female president. she wont be a maragret thatcher(that woman had balls of steel), but she'd be good. bill crosby might do well at a lower level, like schwarzenegger, but not as president.
