Default Proper English

Topic started to discuss Engish views on American-English, American views on Royal English, and general discussions on English language variation. This post was taken from a different topic.

In the immortal words of the wise Rodney King, "Can't we all just get along?"

I might be able to shed some light on this debate. I think that the English feel the same way about American English that (intelligent) Americans feel about Ebonics. Please validate this statement if you are English.

Pretty much. American English is just the least gramatically-incorrect bastardisation... but it's still gramatically incorrect.

Erm, can't help but agree with Wargamer here. The USA is the only place where spelling some words in the manner they do is the correct spelling. I think just aobut every other English speaking country in the world uses the British spelling of the words. It tends to be a bit confused in Canada here but usually if we spell something it's the British spelling so colour, armour, etc.

OK guys, I get it. The whole "lazy American" theory even extends to the spelling discrepancies. I would attempt to disprove that theory, but that would require more energy than I'm willing to dedicate to it. In fact, I think I might need a nap first. maybe tomorrow...or next week. OK, you win. Americans: unite and abolish the flagrantly liberal use of the letter "u"! Next you're going to tell us that we're driving on the wrong side of the road. Nonsense!

Hey, if Americans want to drive on the French side of the road, that's fine by me.

Oh, I felt that one and I wasn't even the target.

On that one, not sure how to take it. There are just aobut an equal number of countries that drive on the left as there are that drive on the right. To be honest I think the onyl ones that would win form such a debate would be car manufactures. no more designing cars so they have the driver on either side before they install the console.

Ouch, Wargamer. You didn't have to cut me that deep. You've just made a grown man cry and I will be absolutely inconsolable for at least three days while I question my meaningless existence. This scar will not likely heal anytime soon.
