Re: 40K Main Battle Tanks

Agreed - this thread has gone way off-topic. Nonetheless, I'd appreciate an apology from Dra'Tuisich-Novae: I think that his last post exceeded the limits of acceptable forum behaviour.

Re: 40K Main Battle Tanks

This part's wrong. There's a recoil figure - from Honour Guard, I think - that puts a Leman Russ Conqueror cannon at a similar muzzle energy to WWII tank cannons, and we've got a bit of data about...

Re: 40K Main Battle Tanks

This would be a valid argument, if your premise were true - but it's not. I'm talking about page 9, from Imperial Armour Update 2002, and similar references on other pages. (SunTzusProphet, that...

Re: 40K Main Battle Tanks

It's standard practice, when describing tank armour, to give the thickness of standard steel that would provide equivalent protection against anti-tank weapons. Sometimes, when this equivalence is...

Re: 40K Main Battle Tanks

They did, actually. From one of the Imperial Armour updates, referring to a Land Raider Prometheus:

Exactly what you asked for. :-)

Re: Tau Titans- time for a re-think

Then you've misinterpreted my argument. Wolf scouts presumably have access to power armour, but they choose not to use it - in the same way as, if the Tau had access to an unlimited number of...

Re: 40K Main Battle Tanks

Explosive reactive armour does a decent job of disrupting a shaped charge, at least for the first time a particular patch of armour is hit. Of course, then you've got tandem shaped charges, where a...

Re: Tau Titans- time for a re-think

Sure, this is another possible reason why carapace armour is preferred in this role. Probably better than the reason I gave. Which reason it is doesn't really affect my argument here, though.

(I...

Re: Tau Titans- time for a re-think

An instructive analogy is to consider what happens when every soldier can be equipped with a horse. In the early twentieth century, there were still situations were cavalry were effective, but much...

Re: Tau Titans- time for a re-think

What makes the Tau unique is that their technological advance is consistent. An Ork Mek might invent some fabulous new device, only for it to be lost at the end of the current Waagh. The Imperium...

Re: Tau Titans- time for a re-think

Foolish how? The use of Mantas as the primary Tau anti-Titan option is supported in fluff/canon/fact, starting with the very first source we have - the third edition codex.

Re: Tau Titans- time for a re-think

The Manta isn't just a heavy weapons platform. It's also the Tau's standard cadre dropship, and their standard anti-spacecraft bomber. Either of those roles is enough to make it common in Tau space -...

Re: Tau Titans- time for a re-think

Well, always is a strong word, but Marksman's argument - that Tau cadres deploy via Mantas, so wherever you have cadres, you have Mantas - is sound.

Wargamer argues that cadres frequently deploy...

Re: Tau Titans- time for a re-think

Perhaps I was mistaken, but you better show me a direct quote to reference that state something along the lines, "Tau, also, use defense platforms based on their planets."
[/quote]

Sure. Tau...

Re: Tau Titans- time for a re-think

On the tabletop, under game mechanics, that's true. In the fluff, though, I think a twenty-metre-tall Titan is going to be a lot easier to spot than a three-metre battlesuit.

Re: Tau Titans- time for a re-think

This is already shown to be false by the fact that the Tau have armed orbital platforms for planetary defense (as seen in Battlefleet Gothic). This invalidates your argument. Do you have any other...

Re: Tau Titans- time for a re-think

But the AX-1-0 is much rarer than the Manta. In the Taros campaign, for example, there was only a single AX-1-0, but there were probably more than thirty Mantas, judging by the number of carrier...

Re: Tau Titans- time for a re-think

We don't have much detail about this part of the battle, but we do know that the Legio Thanataris was countered by Tau Mantas, and that their advancing Titans were 'stalled'. I think we can assume...

Re: Tau Titans- time for a re-think

A note about air superiority: if the enemy has it, then does it really matter whether your superheavy platform is a flyer or not? If it is, then it will be shot down by enemy fighters; if it isn't,...

Re: Tau Titans- time for a re-think

There are a few problems with the scenario you described, about how the Tau would respond to a threat to one of their planets. As Calmsword pointed out, they don't have FTL communications, so they...

Re: Tau Titans- time for a re-think

Interesting question. I imagine that it would be possible to disassemble one into several components, lift them to orbit with superheavy landers, ship them to another planet on a transport...

Re: Tau Titans- time for a re-think

What weaponry should this thing have? Are we going Heavy Ion Cannon based, with multiple high Str low AP shots, or a Heavy Railgun? Should this weaponry be mounted as Anti-Aircraft? Should there be...

Re: Tau Titans- time for a re-think

I've argued, occasionally, that the Tau could conceivably use a Titan-sized mobile ground-to-orbit defense platform. See, for example, here...

Re: Justify!

Well, there's an idea I had a while ago for a sort-of Tau titan - I might even follow through on it some day if I have a few months free to work on modeling it.

For the justification, let's start...
