Default Warp's Nuclear Knights Chapter (SM Project Log)

Hey everyone! I've recently bought a space marine army, hoping to ditch the guard soon. Anyway, I've got them all assembled, so as I paint them and such, I'm going to post my painting progress up here. I've finished Pedro Kantor, two custom Sternguard vets, and a Sergeant made from the Assault on Black Reacharound commander.

You'll notice some of them are black. This is because they're the squad of my failed Black Templar army, which I started and gave up about a year ago. I'm working on painting over them, and actually all the guys I have painted (aside from Pedro) we totally painted over. Enjoy! C and C encouraged and appreciated. ;D

Rileas Urius, Chapter Master of the Nuclear Knights

Sergeant w/ power weapon

Sternguard veterans, with Chapter logo on pauldrons

In the name of the Emperor, finish them!

And the rest...

Even in death I still serve

Pred converted from the rhino in the battleforce a friend’s bitz

Knight’s Hospitallier merge with the newly founded Nuclear Knights

The new recruits…

…And the newer

What makes the grass grow?

Blood! Blood! Blood!

Well, that’s the chapter thusfar. It makes a 1750 point army, so I’m going to try it out for a while. I bought them all at once because our store was having a 20% discount and I couldn’t resist! More updates will come when I spray paint. I’ll try and keep the poses dynamic. (plenty of orks to fight )

Overall, good job on the painting.

The only thing that erks me is "not pedro", are you using his rules or is the model to your liking? I just think it would be cooler to have a converted model to represent Pedro.

Just my 2 cents.

For everything but in my army fluff, he's Pedro Kantor.

At first glace the immediate things that stuck out for me were:
1 - You need more depth of shading - before highlighting stick a deeper wash in the recesses and don't go over it. Watered down chaos black would do the trick, or a generous wash of badab black if you cba to make your own up

2 - The paint is applied to thickly in places. You seem to have gone for a quicker 'less layers more paint' approach on some areas, and it shows. Thin your paint more and you will get flatter and more precise results. Sure you might have to paint it on a couple of times to get good coverage, but it won't look lumpy at the end.

3 - Kantor has the metal of the actual model chipping through in places, looks like he has been knocked over a few times. Cover it in varnish to protect it. If this happened whilst you were painting it, blue tac the base to the top of a paint pot or something that you don't need... or pin it to a cork. Even put it in a mini-vice if you have one!
This could also be that you are not undercoating your model properly... always make sure you fully cover your model with an undercoat before starting and after washing in tepid soapy water. Again, undercoating you are better doing a couple of light sprays than one thick one.

Hope this helps.

1. Thanks for the tip!

2. I'm going to have that problem on a few guys: I'm painting over the black armor and silver and gold details of my failed Black Templar beginnings. But yeah, I'll water down my paints a little more.

3. Yeah, he has a big chip on his backpack which I fixed. I actually did spray him with the anti-varnish, but that is a spot I must've missed.

Why don't you strip your models first?
Then you will be painting 'as new' models

How does one effectively strip plastic models?

I was using dettol multipurpose cleaner to strip for a while. Soak it for about 24 hours (does plastic with no damage too) then hit it with a toothbrush and some elbow grease. Wash mini then prime.
Simple green works the same.

However, I have since switched to using Acetone free nail polish remover. I only have to soak a mini in that for about 20 mins and it's ready to go! I tend to soak metal minis in it for a few hours just to really get everything off, but plastic will start to go soft after about 30 mins, and don't leave it in longer than that as it will melt.
Once it's out scrub it with a toothbrush as above, though you should find the paint comes off much more easily.

It's probably a good idea to get yourself some rubber gloves or the surgical ones... they are really cheap from chemists etc.

Here are some useful resources for the above (and many more):
