Default AL's next big thing (New project)

So some of you might know me form my tyranids plog two years ago, which I will be updating today or tomorrow.

I'm the kind of hobbyist who need intermittant breaks so that I don't get bored of the hobby, and before I launch full-on into converting an endless swarm of gaunts, I'm working on my next "boutique" army.

As always, I try and plan out my projects and put lots of thought into them. Firstly my goals;

General Goals
 • List that plays differently to my nids (Which are now hybrid)
 • Completely converted
 • Better than tabletop quality painting
 • Start at 750 points (For JD 5)
 • Fill list to ~1500 points (for Arc XXIX)
 • Relatively unique in style and theme
 • Competetive list for gameplay/casual tournaments (I get bored if I lose more than 70% of games against average players)

Hobby Goals
 • Using more advanced sculpting tools (Clay sculpters on the way)
 • Casting some of the modifications to make them easier to reproduce
 • Using glazing techniques in painting
 • Using gem techniques for painting
 • Attempt source lighting for special characters

If sucessful, some of these will be taken across to my 'nid army (especially the casting for crests on gaunts).

So, this year's theme is; (Drumroll)

Freudal / Knight world army

Background / fluff setting.
there are a great many feudal worlds in the 40k universe, who are not usually very advanced, and sit in the middle ages technology-wise; they do, however get recruited for the Imperium, or exist as independent (read; ignored) planets.

Knight worlds are similar, but slightly different. Knight worlds are part of the Adeptus Mechanicus, and not actually part of the Imperium; they belong to the forge worlds of the Mars Empire (which people forget is still actually seperate from the Imperium). They are strictly caste-based, with many noble houses on a plant competing for favour from the Adeptus Mechanicus. They provide food, materials, and men to the forge worlds, and the noble's children are screened for the ability to become princeps for the titan legions.

My Task list at this stage;
 • Choose an army list to proxy
 • Test figurine for colour scheme
 • Research (photos and the like for clothing, armour and posing)
 • Test Sculpt

Red = Not Done / Not started
Orange = WIP
Blue = Finalising
Green = Complete

The first thing to address that I would like input from is what to proxy such an army as.

My first thought was imperial guard; satifying the criteria of being different from my nidzilla list, being competitive, and being adaptable. However there are several disadvantages to this. Mostly, the number of models, and that most of the competitive lists seem to be mechguard based, which I'm not entirely keen on doing.

My second thought was Orks. Generally regarded as a very hard codex, but has several advantages; clear caste structure (warboss > Nobs > orks > gretchin), can field a number of vehicles without becoming too vehicle heavy (unless you run pure KOS). Similar disadvantages, large model count, and currently borrowed codex.

I would appreciate your thoughts on these and any other codecis to run off. I have a seperate poll in the general discussion that I would like you to vote on.

VOTE FOR A CODEX NOW!

I've voted in the other thread and left a comment there.

I'm pretty excited to see this project though, from the sounds of it, it will be awesome, and I will be following it accordingly.

Good luck with it and can't wait to see what you come up with.

P.S Did you specificly choose to start the log on Australia Day? Or just a coincidence... :shifty:

Working full time now, so public holidays are about the only thing I get off (and even then, only occasionally given I worked christmas eve, day, boxing day and new year's eve).

No, although I once thought about a light horse brigade, I'm not going to do that (if only because I saw it done very well at arc weekend just past).

Thank-you to those who have helped me decide on the army proxy.

As announced on the other thread, I have settled on the IG list. I have been testing the water about what would make a good 750 points list and have come up with the following;
[armylist]905[/armylist]
Now, some of you may already know this, but I have a bit of a thing for style. And anime. And Steampunk.

Can you guess where this is going?

The knightworld with, rather than medievil, be east asian in style. I will be incorporating Steampunk, Samurai/Bushido and Three kingdoms themes into my army.

I have been collecting some images from around the interwebs to help guide the theme;

A couple of images of different samurai armour from the later periods

Additionally, some clothing from one of my favorite movies ("Fearless")

My ideas at this stage:
Commander: Samurai Armour, sitting on chair
Veterans, Sargeants: light-style Samurai Armour
Guardsmen: Mandarin-style Peasant Clothing

Some masks on samurai-clad; Steampunk goggles (you know the type)
Portable stem-packs; Largish tank, pipe and clockwork, to power lasguns (those energy packs can be powered by anything, supposedly)
Painting Scheme: Strong, layered reds. possibly freehand work to bring out different styles. Dark brown, varnished leathers
Armour: Layered plates, cloth ties to be sculpted.
Heads: Still looking for asian heads at the right scale. May have to sculpt myself (dang!). Kabuto (Samurai) hats and straw hats as appropriate.

If youre going for a fusion of ancient and modern Japanese aesthetics, with a sprinkling of imperial dogma thrown in, id check out some of the figures from Infinity - could be a useful source of inspiration, parts, or as a basis for conversions.

Thank-you.

Is it me, or does the saito model look tau-ish?

Just checked, and if you have access to Youtube do a search for last exile opening, and it should show all the elements you might need for inspiration. Its blocked at work, but the intro shows the soldiers, the airships, architecture, the steam powered guns, and might give you some good ideas.

Those first pictures made me think of this.

It could be a model for some sort of heavy sentinel.
