Default Au'taal sept painting advice.

I've just started a new tau army, and I'm trying to get some of the colors right. I really love the Au'taal sept paint scheme and I decided to go with that. But I'm running into a few problem areas and I was wondering if anyone had any good advice.

1. GW has discontinued one of the main colors (terracotta). I found a few web sites around the net that suggest alternative suppliers. I was wondering if anyone had any advice on finding a Terracotta substitute.

2. What's a good highlight color for terracotta? I've ben mixing white with terracotta and lining my models with that, and it looks "okay", but not very striking. I'm not really happy with the contrast that's coming out of it. I was thinking of using Scab Red as a highlight, but I was wondering if anyone had found something better.

3. I'm having trouble finding a good base/wash to go with Kommando Khaki. I tried Beastial brown which has traditionally been my color of choice for washing clothes, but it made the cloth material look too brown and I didn't like the affect. Khommando Khaki at a distance actually looks "white", so I was thinking something more like Fortress Grey (a grey that has a blue undertone).

4. For vehicles, I need another color to go with Terracotta to off-set it. I can't really use Khommando Khaki as a 2nd tone for vehicle camoflage because it's more of a "cloth" color. iwas thinking of going with a grey.

http://www.dakkadakka.com/wiki/en/Pa...tibility_Chart BAM paint comparison chart.

Vallejo Game Color Terracotta (065)
or
Reaper Master Clotted Red (9134)

Both should be almost identical. I am a fan of Vallejo paints, so I would go with them.

2. Generally bleached bone + main colour works better for highlights than skull white. Should probably be fine for terracotta.

4. I'd probably go with the darker greys, but you could do a pattern with terracotta & a light & dark grey also.

BKZerO: Thank you I will look for some Vellojo paints next time I am at Hobytown and see how it does. Do you know if these paints work ok in the citadel spray gun?

Hairy Grim: Hmm.. I didn't think of using bleached bone, I'll see how that does. For the cloth, I went with a grey wash which seemed to tone it down some. If I can figure out how to get my camera to work I will post a few WIP pictures later today.

That is a great question. The answer is some yes, and some no. You have to look on the side of the bottle. 90% of the paints are ok to put through a sprayer. A few of the colors however contain cadnium which is a heavy metal that you basically don't want to be airborne. There are only a few colors which actually contain cadmium, so just read the bottle. It will have a huge "WARING CONTAINS CADMIUM - DO NOT SPRAY" on the side of the bottle. However, most or Lead/Cadmium free.

I posted my attempts thus far in the Showcase section. I couldn't get a close-up on the cloth armor unfortunately.
