Default Need help with painting metallics

Hello guys!

I never have gotten any good results when painting with metallic colors. And then I decided to start a Grey Knights army. So now I need your help?

What should I think about when painting metallics (mainly silver/boltgun and gold, but maybe bronze aswell)..

How much should I thin it out?

How do I achive good highlights?

What inks and washes shall I use and to I need to thin them aswell?

Brushes. The paint destroys the brushes.. are there brushes that are better for metallics, like syntetics or something?

Now any guides on the internet too look at?

Thanks guys! Hope you can help.

Well, I don't personally do grey night but here is how I paint my silver. I normally take watered down boltgun metal and go over anywhere that needs to be painted. I then water down a black ink and go over it. I then highlight with mithril silver. Hope that helps.

The reflective material in metallics makes it prone to thickness and clumping, but if you water it down too much you can lose some of the metallic effect. Its tough to work with, and even the better paintjobs you'll see still have very thick bits. This is why alot of folks do NMM with armies like the Grey Knights.

Are you going to do any weathering? The reason I ask is that if you decide to add some rust or oxidation, it makes it easier to do really thin coats of the metallic, because you wont be needing the really shiny look from your basecoat. If you do this, simply basecoat and highlight with extra thin coats of the silver, and wash it all with extremely thin washes of blue and brown.

Good luck.

What you can do is take a thin coat of a silver or gold, and paint it on. Then, there is a type of paint called "Masters" from Reaper. This stuff is the greatest ever; no clumps, retains shinyness, and works like normal paint. Use that then ^.^

you can always use my method for painting my marines:

chaos black undercoat
paint everything boltgun metal
Drybrush the armour with mithril silver
ink it with black ink at 1:4 with water
let it dry
highlight with mithril silver
black line where teh plates meet each other
highlight it crisply with skull white - just the very edges

I'll try and get some pictures one time if you want.

@cabomhn: It does help. Thanks man.

@McCoy: Yeah that's what I am scared of. I ahvent really seen any good examples of NMM Knights. I you have any links too that I am very interested. I am planning to do some weathering. I wnat my Knights to have been in battle before, and that it shows.
For the blue and brown washes you mean like an air to ground thing? Blue above and brown below sort of?

@The I B Mage: I don't get that "masters" paint. Is it a metallic paint of diffrent brand?

@S I L K: Pictures would be nice if you could get them 8) Ehat do you use for the blacklining?

Black ink, a good brush, and a steady hand.
