Default Tau colour scheme

I hope this is the right place to put this... I had a quick glance at the Painting Scheme discussion but it seemed to be about someone Else's scheme. Sorry if I got it wrong.

Anyway I am constructing a Tau army (gasp all you want). The army will probably be led by Commander Shadowsun and my original thought was to paint it white, which would also tie in with Commander Shadowsun. But then I started thinking that maybe this would take away the attention that goes to her when she is the only model painted in white. I want my Commander to be a centre piece type model.

So now I'm trying to decide on whether to paint it white, red or 'rotting flesh' (under Vior'la sept in codex) colour scheme.

If you want a snow camo scheme, the all white army idea would be awesome... but if you want your commander to stand out, then I'd go with the rotting flesh scheme for the army, it's the easier scheme to camouflage (maybe in a forest or a swamp)

wait for the foundation paints. a GW staff member let me try them and they are great for a base color for white.

I don't know so much about the foundation paints... when will they be released?

I do know that white is a VERY hard color to paint (but you probably know that too ) so, although it looks incredible if done right, it is very frustrating and I'd advise against it. But how much experience do you have with painting? If this is your first army, I'm 99% set on "don't use white" (even though I think it looks awesome on tau) just because it's really hard to get right. But if you want to, go ahead.

Of the other colors you suggested, rotting flesh is my favorite. I don't like either of them (red or bone-green) too much, but it all depends on how you do it. I've seen pink tau look fantastic, for instance, so it all depends on how you do it.

I also collect Lord of the Rings, but this is my first 40k army.

If I did red, I'd probably try something similar to this: http://home.wowway.com/~tinweasel/gw_tau.html maybe just a little less complicated...

Also the rotting flesh colour is sort of a arid type of camo kind of, and there are quite a few Tau worlds that are Arid (like T'au for instance).

I'm doing a Space Wolves Grey for the armor, and Codex Grey for the underclothing on the Firewarriors with a white Primer(Bork'an Sept camo in the Codex: Tau) and I am quite impressed with how it is looking. I think a white mini would fit right in(you may have to change the coloring on Shadowsun's guns though) without seeming "out of place".

Just my 2 cents though

the foundation paints come out late june.

but at my GW store ( i have no idea about yours) is letting us pre-order them for an early-release entire set, but it is very expensive.

i painted white in 2 coats. astronomican grey foundation, then white, and it looks even and was easy.

it's a wait, but it is worth it.

That's a really nice glowing red in the picture. If you can get that effect, go for the red all the way.

some are.

forinstance, one looks good in one coat for orks. if you have really high standards, then it probably won't work for you.
