Default Complete and utter noob...

Gah... it seems the only thing I can do on these miniatures propperly is base coat them -_-

It seems never learning to paint with a brush has come back and bitten me where the sun doesn't shine, as my fancy cardboard bezier curves and airbrush experience won't do a lick of good, and it seems most guides assume at least the basic knowledge of working with a brush, and as usual GW's site is ever, ever helpful. Anyways whilst my failed minis soak in their film can paint sarcophagi can someone point me to some tutorials for the complete and utter noobish?

While I am unable to point you at any specifics, I can give you some general tips.

1. Patience, if you don't have any get some. You really need to take your time, and I mean really slow down. If you paint your model start to finish in 10 minutes, either you are a painting god or your models will not look even remotely playable. Just relax and take your time. Trust me, it will come to you.

2. Make sure to have a variety of paint brushes. Taking your time to paint is great and all, but no matter how much time you take you can't paint eyes with a tankbrush (actually you can, but its reaaaallllllyyyyyy hard.....)

3. Sit down with a limited palette of colors. Just because you have EVERY color of Vallejo or GW paints doesn't mean you need to use them. Theres a reason that the most effective color schemes don't stray too far from 3-4 base colors.

4. Try to use the opposing color of your main color in a limited fashion if at all. If your painting a marine in a bright blue and you want to use orange (they're opposites on the color pie) use the orange sparingly. Also do it in a way as to not attract attention from the rest of the model. If the marines armor is blue don't paint the whole back pack bright orange, everyones eyes will go toward the back pack and no attention will go to any other part of the model.

5. Stick to a style. If your going for a dirty look to your model don't decide to paint bright neon pink. While it is possible to pull it off (especially if your playing slaanesh... yeah your a dirty boy/girl aren't you), its not likely and a beginner is just begging for trouble.

While I could go on to a lot more detail, these should be your main guides.

Whew, after about 2 hours I finished one miniature to something I'd be happy with. And that poor marine in the film canister...I think the Apothecary won't even be able to get the geneseed. Didn't think about what a benzene based stripper would do to the plastic. Oh well, next time I order some paint I'll get the starter kit to get a free marine or three.

Edit: Well the marine isn't a total loss. The outermost layer of plastic is kinda melted and shrunk back making him look like a severe burn victim. A little grinding, some scorched chaos colors and he'll make a nice casaulty to lay on the flamer wielding marine's base.

That is really important. A lot of newer painters I have noticed have had really atrocious schemes, with too much contrast and really painful colors.

Good luck! Feel free to post your "ugly" model up on the boards for some comments. Who knows, maybe it isn't as bad as you thought it was!

Well I didn't really have to worry about color scheme since I went with the Ultramarines color scheme. As soon as I can bum a digital camera off someone I'll post it.

This website has a lot of excellent paint tips and tricks. They aren't all exclusively to GW but they are very good tips.
