Default Vallejo question

I really want to start Vallejo paints, but I'm so confused about everything and anything...
I don't know the equivilents of GW paints and what colors I should get,
I don't know how much I should apply (I hear it's thinner than GW) and howmuch I should thin,

And I'd really like it if someone could just tell me some more information on Vallejo before I go and get like $20 worth of paints...

I'm no expert, but I am using Vallejo paints and I really like them. They are thin but spread nicely and evenly and I've rarely found the need to thin them out; unless I want to thin them out for a particular effect, not because they are thick. A little really goes a long way with these so they are really cost effective also.

As for what colors are what compared to GW, I've had good luck at a local shop just asking someone who works there and they've always known the conversion. The names are pretty similar though so not too hard to guess what is what. Like Bleached Bone in Vallejo is Bone White or Scorched Brown is Charred Brown, etc.

Another question - does it matter if I get model or game color? If so, which do you recommend?

Again, my knowledge is limited, but the Game Colors are the GW replicas (if you will), where the Model line has far more colors to offer. Aside from that fact, not sure what the other differences there are.

Then im sure if you post pictures of your models, it will be obvious by the quality, which paint line you use. :

Model color is mainly intended for military models with lots of greens, browns and greys. The Game color range is thinnner and intended to compete directly with GW paints. They are named similarly for easy matching.

Hey 1shot, I can say that Vallejo paints are really good. I was of the mindset of KommandoKrieg for a long time just because I knew GW paints were good, so why try something else? Anyway, I've bought a few and they are really high quality and a bit cheaper than GW. They are a bit thinner but I still thin them with water anyway. Make sure you shake them before use. I always seem to forget this when using Vallejo and they are way worse unshaken than GW paints are. That's just my forgetfulness, though, not really a problem with the paint.

As for the Model and Game Color, I always wondered that myself. Thanks for clearing that up Thor and Arschbombe!

If you want to see some color conversions of the different lines, here are a couple of I've found:

Uh, guys, I posted this topic in January :P

I've been using Vallejo paints for some time, and I like them much, much more than GW paints. I'm hoping to limit my GW paint usage to the point that I'd have nearly all Vallejo.
