Default Grey Knights Dreadnaught (PIP)

I took a trip to my local hobby store. Among other things, I got a dreadnought!!11!!11one!11!!!!

So here's a piccie of the little WIP bugger. It was (and is) a blast to paint this $40 robot (I still can't believe this piece of plastic was $40...) and here he is:

I've decided to name him "Squishy"

Metal minis are starting to get on my nerves, and that might be why that PLASTIC dreadnought was so much fun to paint...

So...please comment!
I would like to know:
1) How good my painting is
2) What/How to improve
3) What you think would make it look better
4) What color should I paint the lascannon??? Should I leave it black, or paint it another color?
5) What color do you recommend for highlighting black? I used a mix of chaos black and codex grey, and then straight codex grey, but for some reason it just doesn't "click" with me...

and anything else you want to say!! Before you ask - sorry, I'll get more angles ASAP!

Shadow grey is an excellent color for highlighting black. Try doing what you did with codex grey except with shadow.

Thanks
Some more angles:

This gives a shot of the black lascannon which I think looks very bland. Also shows the gem effect I have put in several places throughout the model.

This shows the also rather boring missile launcher-thingy. I think that the side is too plain and I really want to add like an =I= in there or something. Problem is, my freehand sucks :-(

Oh - and by the way, before you comment on the "horsies" in the background of the last pic, they were painted by my grandmother just before she died. So, no, I'm not a particular fan of paintings of ponies prancing in a field (I AM a guy :P), but that still does hold a place in my heart for sentimental reasons...and it must've snuck into that pic somehow

I see a kroot in the background I think he's ready to take on Squishy here if your looking to do that =][= symbol try doing some sketches on paper before putting to the model

;D Let's do a fight then!
Turn 1: Kroot hits, doesn't do anything. Dreadnaught steps on the little bugger like, well, a bug

One less kroot in my collection.

Anywhoo, I know some of the pics aren't clear. I don't have the steadiest hands in the world, the camera's a pretty bad camera, and I don't have a tripod or anything like that...so...

Your painting is actually quite good, 1shot. The painting on the mini is pretty basic in level, but you applied it well.

Only thing I can find is the Medallion Crimson's red colour. I think it should be highlighted a little bit more. Otherwise the model's great.

It looks good the way it is, however I think it'd also be good drybrushed Boltgun Metal.

I use Codex Grey to highlight black. And if that doesn't work for me I've got two other mixing colours that are more specialized. If the highlights need to be darker I use a mix of Chaos Black and Codex Grey, and if I'm looking for lighter highlights I do a mix of Codex Grey and Fortress Grey. Sometimes even mixed with Skull White.

Yeah, I realized the medallion needed some more highlighting...it's hard to highilight it though. I think I've got it now, though...just a little more touch ups and stuff and it'll be ready for the showcase! ;D

Thanks for all the comments.
