Default Iron Warriors Paint scheme

I was just wondering how i would paint the Iron Warriors, would i go from boltguns metal to a lighter metal? like mithril? or what?

also, i would like put put gold on them so they look a bit like this...click here

i just have no idea how to paint gold either...surprisingly, painting gold or silver is sorta new to me (dont usually use metallic paints) so anyone who could help me it would be very much appreciated.

thx

Usually painting a highlight colour of a lighter silver will make the model look more clean. Mostly, the Iron Warriors are a pretty rustic army, so it'd probably be best to simply drybrush Boltgun Metal, and nothing else, all over the armour. It'd give it the metal look, while keeping it a little rough.

The main Iron Warriors scheme does have gold on it, so if you're following it from the codex, it'll have gold on it. That'd be Shining Gold, and maybe some Brazen brass as a highlight colour if you're looking for some more royal, or important Chaos Space Marines.

Metallic colours are very easy to apply, actually. You just lightly cover the model you're painting with your metal colour, and it'll be done. Even controlling the kind of metal your models have on them is pretty easy. Basically, if you want rusted metal, pick drybrushing to apply the model, if you want really new metal looking models, take a normal amount of metal paint straight from the pot and cover the model's material. It's pretty simple.

Hope your metal comes out right.

If you have a good amount of experience painting, then I would strongly recommend doing something a little above and beyond the standard Iron Warriors paintjob. The extremely basic color scheme means most of the IW armies you see will not be done to a high standard at all. They are often one of the ugliest armies on the table top because they can be done very quickly to match the studio colors.

Using a decent amount of gold, some watered down inks (brown, black, orange, or a mix) and mixing in some of the black/yellow stripes will make these guys look good on the field.

yeah, i figured i would do them in boltgun metal, with gold trim(?) then do the yellow/black striping on their weapons, and then use inks (brown or black) to make the armor look old and weathered.

Do a black ink on the metals then highlight with the original color again, then a lighter metal like chainmail or mithril silver on the boltgun and burnished gold for the shining gold.

I prefer mixing Mithril Silver into Shining Gold, personally. Burnished isn't my cup of tea... either way shading with Dwarf Bronze or watered down Flesh/Chestnut Ink is the way to go for gold.
