Default Painting problems ---- The Dreaded Red

Hey all ,

I'm in a really depressing situation at the moment , so far I have ruined 4 tau firewarriors and a piranha and I do not want to destroy the rest of my megaforce,

I sort of have a plan of how to paint my tau and I am starting a firewarrior from scratch tommorow doing exactly this ,

1.basecoat black

2. bestial brown on all areas that are going to be red (armour)

3. Paint red gore over bestial brown

4. wash red gore with dark flesh

5. Highlight with blood red

6. highlight black (underarmour clothes) with codex grey/chaos black mix

7. Paint tau symbol on shoulderpad Gold

8.Paint lenses (green gem effect , I love gems need no help here , probably what I'm best at , green gems)

9. base etc

Anything to add in or any helpful tips for painting red are greatly appreciated , 16 firewarriors , a devilfish , a hammerhead , 2 crisis suits , 2 piranhas , 6 gun drones and 3 stealth suits can still be saved!

Please help me :-\

Have you stripped the current paint off your firewarriors with simple green

Whoooot? Red is possibly the best and easiest colour to paint with!

Using those browns and almost maroon in the scab red will make them come up with a richer red, so if thats what you want i cant see what the problem could be..

Try only using black, blood red and firey orange. Just slowly mix up the red layers from black, and do tiny final highlights in orange.

simply try a few more test models using different techniques before you start the army. That way you'll be sure youre happy with your results.

thanks waargh , but before I can do what you are saying I need to know how to blend

I'm not entirely sure how to go about with blending I know what is and have read on Cmon and other sites , how to do it but I cannot pull it off I always end up mixing them
so instead of say a nice blend from blood red to blazing orange , I end up with orange so I basically end up mixing them completely into the same colour rather than blending , does anyone have any good tutorials ??? or can they try to explain how I go about easing them into each other smoothly.

I know this has nothing to do with blending but Grey is also another good basecoat for red

Wow, people having trouble with red using ALL THOSE STEPS??? Heres how I do it...

Base-coat: Chaos Black
Coat 1: Watered down Red Gore.
Coat 2: Watered down Red Gore.
Coat 3: Watered down Red Ink.
Coat 4: Red Ink.

I get a nice and rich deep red color, isn't even that back breaking too.

Thats because youre probably trying to wetblend. Its a pretty tricky technique, so i generally avoid it...and i reccomend you do too!

Just use really watered down paint, i usually go 3:1 with reds. It also helps if you let the paint sit there for a while, then you simply paint each layer as each previous layer dries. Remember big dark layers first, moving down to small and light, (and larger brushes moving down to small).

I rather use one of two different methods. I try to get my paints thick, and I daub rather than stroke with the brust. Better 1 coat coverage, same effect. Also I prime white and red ink often.

Daubing technique:

Inking technique:

thanks for all the tips but it seems I just can't paint at all

here are some pictures of a 4 firewarriors I've been testing on with no luck at all.

this is getting me very frustrated and I am very tempted to change my colour scheme to other colours that I can paint.

comments on my tau are welcome but I know they're terrible so ideas for a new colour scheme are also welcome
