Me and my friend have an imperial guard project going and everything is going smoothly, except that weve found that it consumes a huge amount of time to paint the faces in the way i usually do (6 highlight stages). So, what would you think to be a good way to make the faces and how many highlights would be suitable for the rank-and-file guardsmen.

Erm, all wrong. 1 coat of flesh depending on what color you prefer, and watered down brown ink (otherwise known as an ink wash)

you want quick, diablo's method is good. either that or over a white undercoat, do a good solid flesh-wash inking, then drybrush bronzed flesh. nothing fancy, but it'll get 'em done

I tried a wash of flesh wash over a wwhite undercoat and then paint with bronzed flesh leaving flesh wash in the recesses. That went pretty fast and it looked good enough for normal guardsmen, ive already painted 12 guardsmen today.

The way I used to do it (over black prime) was basecoat with bronzed flesh, Flesh or Chestnut Wash (they didn't do inks back then), then highlight back up with bronzed flesh. All my faces looked rather tanned, but they didn't look too dark. Quality job on the eyes goes a LONG way toward making a face look good, but if you're pressed for time, skip them. Drybrushing is definitely your friend when it comes to "assembly-lining." I did all my Ork mobs that way, and they look pretty good.
