Default Should I invest in Epic????

I have three fundamental questions:
1. What exactly is Epic
2. Where does it fit in the 40K Universe
3. Is it popular enough to justify the expense of the new models

From what I can tell locally the third is most likely no. however, if I am sufficiently intrigued I may decide to do it anyway (after all it is only $).

Epic is... well... Epic.

Picture any 40K battle image. What do you see? You see thousands of troops, flyers, artillery, tanks, Titans, Starships, and a sky turned black with gunsmoke... and yet 40K is thirty guys and a tank.

Epic is the 40K universe, in the correct scale.

Epic represents the truly titanic battles that you could never before accomplish. 40K is nothing in comparison (the entirity of a 40K game represents one Epic close-combat phase...).

The Epic fanbase is spread thinly... find a group, introduce them all to it, and play. You will not regret it.

Thanks for the input. Sounds good to me. I have a few buddies who really live for battles of that magnitude. The only obstacle I see right now is the expense. I may have to wait until well after Christmas at this point - but I am definetly intrigued. Thanks.

i might consider starting with epic. iim either going to:
1)get a proper IG army. all ive got now is a samll battlecompany and a half a**ed regiment thats mostly greyknights anyways.
2)start with warhammer fantasy, dwarves rule
3)start epic, im a huge treadhead.

You could start with just the rulebook, some Hot Wheeles and other stuff to proxy, and then decide if you even like it. Then, with Christmas loot, you could buy in... or not!

That's a great idea Black Sword. Hadn't thought of proxies. And a lot of extra time to really dig into the rules would be helpful. Thanks!

Hi!

If you decide to take the plunge into Epic, and you can actually find opponents, you'll never look back!

(Because looking at BFG is a sideways glance, so tht's OK!)

As regards available armies, you can get Steel Legion IG, Siegemasters IG, Eldar, Space Marines and Orks in metal and plastic from GW Mail Order, or the excellent Epic Tau range in resin from Forge World. Feral Orks will be out from SG early next year - only a year late - and the next IA book from FW will be Tyranid-focussed, so it's a good bet they'll do Epic scale versions of their Tyranid creatures, at least we hope it's the case!

Armies like Chaos and the old Tyranids can be found on eBay, but if you want Necrons you'll have to convert them yourself - although there are old Chaos Androids which may do the trick, plus the 40K scarabs make nice potential Destroyer bodies for them, but they are hard to find though...

There is plenty of discussion about Epic in all its forms at EpiComms and at the SG Epic Development boards if you'd like to see where the in-development lists (Tau, Chaos, Necrons, Tyranids etc) are heading.

Also, all of the current pdfs are over at SG's Epic site.
