I was playing fallout 3 and recentally found a dog (named dogmeat) who to my suprise didn't try to kill me and actually is now following my character, anybody else had this happen in other cases (as in not dogmeat)?

There's a huge list of people who will join your party, from brotherhood of steel to super mutants to death claws, so yes, it happens.

Oh my God...

I'm sorry but that does it for me. You've killed my interest in Fallout 3.
If the glitches and Oblivion with guns gameplay didn't fully do it, you finished it. :P

It's not a personal attack, but I guess the new Fallout is past my time, when there's people who don't know about Dogmeat. :'( :-\

A) it isn't that glitchy
B) it isn't Oblivion with guns

Now, for the dogmeat thing, it's alright man. Just take some deep breaths and try to hold the tears in. There's bound to be people who don't know about Dogmeat, but they don't matter. There are idiots everywhere, just let it go.

Dogmeat is a lot less useful than he was in Fallout though, so you'll probably have to make him essential to get any use out of him.

My copy started glitching on day 1.

(It wasn't anything bad at first merely funny NPC movement issues and some weird color splintering).
Later on in the game it started glitching horribly. So bad that the one area near Tenpenny towers would freeze every single time I got near to it!

As for your second point, this is more like Oblivion with guns than it is a Fallout game. Sure you can rebadge the items and tweak a few things but this game plays just like Oblivion would under the circumstances.

I was willingly to look over the vast number of changes that Bethesda made, but don't expect me to lap this up as a True Fallout game.

The Dogmeat thing wasn't a big thing, the fact that we're getting a huge number of players who never knew what the original Fallout's were about, what made them award winning games in the first place (in their respective years).
Because there's so many new players, Bethesda will get away with the rape they have already started on the Fallout franchise, nobody will know any better. :-\

As a long time player of both Oblivion and Morrowind I can clearly say that Fallout 3 is no where near just Oblivion with guns.

Lets see....

Fallout 3 focuses on guns. Big guns, small guns and energy weapons. And with melee thrown in as a quirky side-option. Yet Oblivion had a combination of magic (loads of fun options) many different types of melee weapons and ranged weapons. All combined to work equally well. Does Fallout have magic or something to equal magic? No. Does oblivion have such a huge range of weapons, each one different from the next? Not really. One handed maces and axes are pretty much the same, as are hammers and battle axes, however swords, daggers and claymores all play differently. Yet Fallout comes with Mines, grenades, miniguns, rocket launchers, lasers, assault rifles, magnum pistols, scoped pistols, sniper and hunting rifles. None of those weapons behave in a similar fashion.

The levelling system of the two games couldn't be further apart from each other. Oblivion rewards you for using your skills, level up your skills 10 times and you then level up yourself increasing atributes and health. Fallout 3 more or less works on the same system as the previous two games - you just get perks every level rather than every 3 levels and a cap at 20. It still sticks to the SPECIAL attributes and a good number of the skills still exists, only Gambling, outdoorsman and Pilot truly not exist anymore. Others have just been merged into other skills.

So how about the environment? Well, yes I will admit that they are both (largely) open ended and allow you to go anywhere that you want. But, lets not forget that F1+2 was open ended too. However, Oblivion offers you a largely static and safe world. You can get to any of the major cities in an instant. In Fallout 3 the only other location that you know is Megaton. And that is it. You are abandoned in a world with only your own wits as company. Fallout has a good number of random encounters hightening the violence of the conflict of DC city. Does oblivion give you that? No. Hell, does Oblivion have you fighting more than 2 people at once? No.

You wouldn't believe how close I came to smiting you for that comment. Bethesda hasn't completely and utterly destroyed the game. And whilst it isn't an Interplay F3 that doesn't automtically mean that Bethesda have abandoned everything from the previous games.

The huge list of people that will follow you is in Fallout 2. There's an intelligent Deathclaw in there somewhere.

There are only 8 possible followers in Fallout 3, and most of them will only follow you if your karma is at a certain point. Plus, you can only have one follower at a time (not including Dogmeat.)

Then we'll just have to disagree SILK. I feel that they've done a poor job of extending a series I felt to be one of the best. They may not have utterly changed the game...But it's changed more than I personally care for. Besides you can't say that newbs who don't know any better wouldn't have liked Groin shots!

That's a shame to hear really (that you felt that way). Luckily you must have realized that there would be no real backing for this (since, as opinion, my words weren't really hurting anyone in particular). :P

Ouch... I'm hurt... Commence smiting! :P

What I hope from people who don't know about Fallout 1 and 2 (I also enjoy Fallout Tactics, the multiplayer was fun) is that after they play F3 they'll go back and experience those games. So many pop culture references from Princess Bride to Monty Python. Plus everybody loves whoring around, becoming a porn star, shotgun weddings, and of *course* groin shots.

I belive the intelligent Deathclaw's name was Goris? The robot you get in F2 is certainly not as cool as Sergeant RL-3! Although it's fun putting Abby Normal's brain into it lol.

There are also a few references to F1&2 in F3, such as the familiar ghoul with the little tree on his head that's not so little anymore...

Back on topic, where did you find Dogmeat?
