Default Fallout 3 (warning:spoilers)

I will put up a review similar to FT/Silk's of Fable II soon, when I play it more. But I'm about 4-5 hours of playing time in, and I must say... this is really better than I thought it would be.

It is fantastic. So far.

(Note: I only say "so far" because you never know, it may just seem great now and later I'll like it less. But I don't see that happening)

But really, it's magnificent. It definitely got a thing or two from Mass Effect, and maybe a little bit from Bioshock (but to be honest, it seems more like Bioshock was just copying off of earlier Fallouts :P).

Initial impressions:

Controls are smooth and easy to get used to (this could be because it's pretty much identical to Oblivion, from using B to access inventory/quests/fast travel to hitting back to wait to hitting RT to attack and holding it to charge attack.) So yeah, it's almost 100% Oblivion-in-the-future in terms of controls and general gameplay - resting, sleeping, night and day, alchemy is like creating guns, etc. etc.
But Fallout 3 isn't Oblivion covered in a thin futuristic mask. It's truly its own game that takes the great things from games like Oblivion, Mass Effect, and even Gears of War (you knew it'd get a mention) and also draws upon it's own original content to create a game that is really great. The dark and gritty graphics, mixed with suspenseful and somewhat scary parts as well as darkly humorous lines really did make me think of Gears of War. The targetting system is unlike any I've seen, with the opportunity to aim on your own or hitting RB to do some kind of 'super' aim, where you can target limbs and bodyparts to fire at, spread the shots around, or do a mix of both.
There is variety in weapons, skills, character traits, appearance, morals (good vs. evil that really really reminds me of Mass Effect). I have successfully been stealthy and have successfully charged in guns blazing, there really are lots of options. So far, I am incredibly pleased.

The storyline is gripping and interesting, and the post-nuclear-war graphics are truly stunning and horrifying. This game isn't for the faint of heart - often there will be carcasses dangling limply, suspended in the air by wires or ropes, and shooting something will make that thing bleed and often fly right off, be it a head, arm, or pretty much anything. The suspense is really gripping to me - I wasn't expecting it, but pretty much from the start I found myself sitting a bit more on the edge of my seat as usual, and breathing a little heavier. It's not Dead Space, but it definitely is suspenseful (in a Gears of War way) and I can definitely see me needed a break after long, dark playing sessions

Overall, this game is... breathtaking. Again, I'll repeat, "so far." I don't want to jump to conclusions and say this is the "best game evar!!!" when I (hopefully) am not even close to done, but I have definitely played quite a bit of it (I was sitting on that couch for a long time, I'll tell ya that) and right now... I couldn't be more pleased.

I'll post up a second review of it later, when I've beaten the game. But right now... it is to die for*.

Oh, and did I mention the game's based in DC? Do you guys know where I live? DC. That's right. My mom works on the corner of Dupont Circle. I take the Metro's Red Line all the time, and when I entered Chevy Chase in the game, my heart began to thud. (I live near Chevy Chase, in Takoma Park - metro stop Takoma, which is IN THE GAME).
Yeah. A little weird to see the city YOU LIVE IN in a game like this. Seeing the same metro map I see almost every day, in a post-nuclear-war video game... seeing street signs I wander around all the time... it's really eerie. While I don't really recognize any of the streets (be it because of the nukes or poor realism, I dunno) it's definitely a strange experience to see this apocalyptic war going on right outside my front door. Like, really strange. It's indescribable.

Sounds excellent, and a great review (which is why I now have to kill you, of course).

This is another I really want to play, the amount of games this month is tempting me to give up socialising for the month so I can afford them all.

Nice to see its a well done game, I guess my only choice now, this or Fable?

Yeah, this game is great. There, I said it. From the things you can do, and maybe shouldn't do...

From robots to really basic computers, it's just so funny, and dark at the same time. just like me! >

I know I'm just excited as you are 1shot, I'm tickled in a different way though.

You know the aircraft carrier in the promo art (and possibly game, dunno since I haven't played yet)? The base for that ship was sunk in my state!

How is the game's food/water search? Is it annoying to constantly scan food/water or is hunger rare in the wastelands?

I CANNOT find the freaking aircraft carrier, and if it's rivet city, I need to.

The food thing is not annoying, but most of the drinks have radiation, so... be prepared to irradiate if you drink too much coke.
