Default CoD4 Tips

Here is just some of my random musings on ways to get kills on Xbox live or Split Screen for Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare.

Weapons

As you should know, the weapons are in 6 classes:

Assault
SMG
LMG
Shotgun
Sniper
Pistol

I will start with upgrades:

Grenade launcher

Generally speaking, the UGL (Underslung Grenade Launcher) is only for new players, and is only for assault rifles. Grenade launchers can be used for 'Noob-grenading', which will be covered later. Most higher ranked players will use a red dot sight, but not always.
The grenade launcher fires a single grenade, which works differently to a normal grenade. If you fire it a distance of up to about 10 feet, it will damage your opponent, but not kill them. It is best at mid distance, as it will explode, moves very fast, and is fairly accurate. It takes a little skill to aim, and is aimed in a similar way to Halo's brute shot.

Red Dot Sight

The Red Dot Sight (RDS) or Precision Reflex Sight take the form of a small sight with a red dot is the centre, as can only be expected. It is unlockable on all weapons except the snipers, and is gained by getting 25 kills with that weapon. The RDS is excellent, in that it barely moves will aiming, and it is fairly precise. The RDS is excellent for shooting people as the cross streets, because you can quickly snap onto them.
It is also excellent for 'Rolling aims', where you fire from the hip whilst pressing the aim button, to roll into better accuracy whilst shooting. They are not so useful on shotguns, as there is too much recoil to lend itself to any accurate role.

Grip

Available on LMGs and Shotguns, the Grip lessens recoil, so you can shoot accurately for longer preiods of time. With the shotgun this is an obvious choice: you have to do as much as you can to cope with its inaccuracy. With the LMG it is harder to choose better accuracy (RDS), and reliability (Grip). I personally go with the RDS, as with all the LMGs one or two accurate shots will be enough to take down most everything (except Helicopters ).

ACOG Scope

Avaliable on all weapons except the shotguns, the ACOG scope is a very interesting feature. It is unlocked for getting 75 kills: thus making it much harder to get than the RDS. The ACOG gives extra range to most weapons (though less to Snipers), and more accuracy on far away targets. However, when close up, the snap-on, snap-off ability of the RDS is much better, so it's a matter of preference really.
The ACOG really shines when put of Snipers, the M21 expecially, and the Barret also. The wider scope and lack of a need to hold your breath means and you can use your sniper more like an accurate, powerful assault rifle, which is deadly.

Silencer

Good for objective missions, it lower the range of your gun fairly signifigant ly. It is most commonly seen on P90s, as they have rubbish range anyway. Recommended over the RDS is you're going in stealthly. Usually pointless on Assault Rifles.

Camo

None
No camo is often the best camo: black weapons are generally ok, and will never look stupid. They work well on the dark maps (Chinatown, Wet Work), but often lose points in the desert maps. It's the best choice unless you're making a specialised class.

Desert
Obviously good for desert maps, however it is glaringly obvious on the Russian maps, which makes in a poor choice unless you are specialising.

Woodland
Fairly ubiquitous, it works superbly with the Ghillie suit. It also works fairly well on the Desert maps, as it isn't shiny, and can be hidden in deep grass.

Digital
Fairly pointless, only useful for specialising for Vacant.

Blue Tiger
Initially appears just for being a show-off, but works surprisingly well on Wet Work.

Red Tiger
Get it because you can. :P

Perks

Perk 1:

C4 X 2- Excellent for Search and Destroy or Sabotage, it is an excellent safety net and sometimes beats claymores.
Claymore x2- Good for snipers, very reliable, but very predictable.
RPG x2- Excellent for taking down helicopters, but fairly useless in combat.
Bandolier- Good for weapons with limited ammo, but generally you won't survive long enough to need this perk.
Frag x3- Good all rounder.
Bomb Squad- A must-have for Stealth classes (UAV jammer/SMG)
Special Grenades x3- Sometimes useful, but most of the time you will not get full use from this perk.

Perk 2:

Stopping Power- Excellent with any weapon, just makes those quick shots hurt.
Juggernaut- Considered fairly nooby, but the noobs survive, don't they?
Sleight of Hand- For LMGs this is essential.
Double Tap- Good for snipers, but generally trumped by stopping power.
Overkill- Essential for Deathmatches, UAV jammer is superior tactically.
UAV jammer- The big stealth Perk, makes you invisible on radar, and is excellent for getting the jump on UAV confident enemies.
Sonic Boom- Only useful is you're a boomhead, is gopod for getting explosive achievements.

Perk 3

Extreme Conditioning- Excellent for rushing objectives.
Steady Aim- The 'Best' perk 3 by many accounts, no Shotguns or SMGs should be missing this perk!
Last Stand- Good for twitchies, but often you won't get full use.
Martyrdom- If you're getting up close and personal, this works excellently, but it's just embrassing having exploding snipers everywhere.
Deep impact- Good with LMGs. Cover becomes pointless for your prey.
Iron lungs- Undoubtably the best Sniper Perk 3.
Dead silence- More useful than it first seems, excellent for stealth people.
Eavesdrop- Generally useless, everyone talks trash.

Techniques

Nood Grenading

Is the the art of getting kills with grenades by throwing them wildly at areas where the enemies often go, usually into areas you can't see. "Surely that's the whole point of grenades, Songblade?" I hear you ask. No. Nood grenades are often thrown across the entire map, pre-empting movement down typical pathways. Since I hate people who do this so much, I am not going to give any tips on how to do it (though UGLs are very deadly accurate at this), rather I am going to tell you how to avoid it.
It is fairly simple: at the start of the match, go to the back of your respawn area, and count to ten, or until you hear explosions. Then leave. Some noob probably just wasted his grenades.

See-4

See-4 is the act of sticking C4 somewhere important, then aiming your gun at whatever the C4 is covering. When someone approaches the corner, you fire non-stop, until you have to reload. Who knows, that might even kill them! Then, when the person thinks you are reloading, double tap reload, and the C4 will go off, often getting you a kill. It's not one for the accuracy lovers, but it's never failed me.

Crawl of Duty

Crawl of Duty is when you spend as much time as you have lying on your belly, and gonig forward slowly. You can wriggle past anything: sniper, gunfights, explosions, until you are behind enemy lines. Then, once you are there, set about killing enemies. It's as simple as that.

See you in Paradise

Is simply the act of cooking a grenades, and running into a room full of enemies. It doesn't always work, but hwne it does, it rocks.

Weapons you love to love

MP5....Sniper?
Try using an MP5 with a RDS and sniping with it. If you tap the trigger gently, and steadily aim, you will find it's remarkably accurate.

Finale....

I hope enjoyed my guide, as I enjoyed writing it! My fianl tip is that you play it as a game: don't end up like me: screaming at your Xbox that it lies and generally causing discontent.

G'day

Songblade

M21....Assault Rifle?
Mentioned above, the M21 with ACOG is like cracking a nut with a sledgehammer with lots of ammo, a mile long shaft and a laser pointer: fun and deadly.

Barret....SMG?
Use a Barret 50.cal with steady aim aor ACOG, and try firing from the hip. It is very powerful ,and surprisingly accurate.

I'd like to add, for PS3 players, when playing online, switch the control scheme to Default Flipped (the fourth option down). You then use L2 to aim and R2 to fire which means it's a lot more precise and you can firse semi-auto weapons at ridiculous rates with practise. People are always surprised when you unload a whole pistol clip into them in 1 second!

And I'd like to add that silencers on assualt rifles, when combined with UAV Jammer, worlks wonders on Hardcore. While this is undoubtedly worthy of Karma Songlblade, it's not very good as everyone has their own playing style which you can't prescribe to any one person. My friends all think I'm stupid for using an ACOG sight, as they ALL think it's crap, but then they see me use it (I'm very, very very good with it) and they change their tone. I find myself disagreeing with a lot of what you say, such as that even on maps such as Bloc and Creek, the Silencers reduced range has no effect whatsoever. However I agree with the LMG grip tactic!

(also that I too scream at my PS3 that it lies to me)

Thanks Wissam.

I agree on the 'each to his or her own' front entirely. I personally use an M21 with ACOG and a P90 with a RDS and it works pretty well.

The thing about Bandolier is that it lets you be trigger happy.
You'll never need the ammo if you play normally, but with it, I've gotten numerous kills because I didn't mind emptying a clip or two into a shadow.
ACOG can be handy for counter-sniping with an assault rifle, with steady aim for the people who get close.

And for those who are wondering, grenades are used to get people out of cover. With a bit of practice, you can cook a grenade, through it onto the thin wall inbetween two window, then hear it bounce onto the person on one of the machine gun stands in Backlot.
Smoke can be useful to get cover on a run to aforementioned entrenched enemies, while flash and stun for storming buildings.
I've used an unchanged, very flexible weapon combo for a while, of M4-ACOG/Red Tiger or G36C-RDS(no acog unlocked yet), USP.45-Silencer, Smoke Grenade, Bandolier, Steady Aim and UAV Jammer.

Very nice multiplayer-review-thing, maybe some level specific tactics if you wish to expand.

I do this with every bloody game I play, its why I won't wear my headset, as I don't wanna get trouble for the amount I scream insults

Nice write up, CS although I would like to add that people using the Noob-Tube are the spawn of Hitler.

I'm half joking

+1 for your effort

While I'm currently working on getting the golden AK and the Golden Dragunov (I already have the M60 ^^), so I'm using different weapons atm (only 50 more headshots for the golden AK!), my wonder class is M4 - ACOG, Golden Desert eagle, flash grenade, bandolier, double tap and dead silence. It's is nigh on perfect.
