Default Half Life 2 update sizes?

Hey guys.

I'm trying to get the Orange Box for christmas, but the fact it uses Steam is a little worrying. You see, I've only got a 500MB a month internet connection (anything more then that costs extra money).

I was going to ask those of you who have experience with the Half Life games (2, ep 1, ep 2) how big the updates (which I'm told download automatically, and are nesscesary to run even the single player game) are likely to be. If they are too large, I'll have to get something else.

Thanks for your time.

just run it on offline mode if you don't want to upgrade it, and there not that big.. i'll have a look for you

well all the files in my steam folder are only a few kb i know it updates pretty quick as i've yet to catch mine updating..

and you don't have to use steam if your buying it from a store, just don't install it and it should work.. ot just set tit so it doesn't start on startup and run it in off line mode

No, don't, off-line mode is crap, half the time it doesn't work and you have to connect and download the patches anyway.

worked perfectly fine for me, it just lets you get to your games if you don't have a shortcut on desktop

Didn't when I had dial-up, half the time I'd go to run it and get a message saying there were problems with steam, and I'd have to connect to fix it.

What exactly do you do to play Steam games offline Timjim? Are you sure you never have to update or use Steam?

Not meaning to doubt you, it's just that other people have said otherwise (such as Shas'BBQ) and I can't afford to make mistakes when mistakes cost as much money as they do.

well you set it so it doesn't automatically start when you turn pc on, i don't know about dial up but you don't have to have internet to use steam, it won't be the most up to date version but it will still work,

if your buying the box set it will work normally, it will probably ask you if you want to install steam, if it does just click no.. simple as that, it'll be just be like a normal game

No, that is very wrong, you cannot play the games without steam, and without the internet, you cannot get steam working.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steam_%...nt_delivery%29 - Scroll down to the criticism section, it says each game needs to be validated online.

What's your idea on the sizes of the updates Shas'O BBQ? Would they be plausible to someone with a 500mb internet connection (a month)?
