Default I want to convince my Dad to let me play Oblivion again...

Hello, title abouts sums it up.

He stopped me playing because it was TOO VIOLENT in his opinion. It is NOT to me. He thinks I am one of those poor sad wretches who see something on a computer and do it in real life i.e. Kill. I am not. I am intelligent. I want to start playing again.

I want an argument that will let me play again. Can any of you provide one? I am totally stuck but I really want to play! Morrowind doesn't work anymore, so that's out of the question.

Thanks for reading my post.

PS: If he thought it was violent, thank god he hadn't seen the nude mod I had installed secretly! ;D

hmmm... too violent? too violent?

Does he knowthat it aint all about the violence? And that in contrast to certain games such as condemned it isn't all that violent? iv'e been playing Oblivion since the date of release and i haven't encountered anything that was overly violent. HAS he actually seen more than a few minutes of the game?

If so i recomend telling him to play for a while.

Ha! Ha! You should let him see GTA. Hookers, extreme violence, stealing, selling drugs. :-X

Bah, Oblivion doesn't even compare to the violence of other video games. Namely GTA and Unreal Tournament. Gears of War, you can chainsaw your enemies in half! If your dad thinks video games turn people into psychotic killers, he is horribly mistaken.

You should take away the T.V then, theres more sex and violence on T.V than there is on video games. Tell him, at the end of the day, its just entertainment. Like listening to music, or watching T.V.

'Kay lemme go on my little rant.

In warhammer you and another person make up armies of little men, tanks demons, nuns-with-guns etc. Then, your objective is to kill your opponents models. If you imagine it, my devilfish's burst cannons is thudding away into your troops, and killing some. Some would say that is not real violence. Those models arn't 'alive'.

Well i tell you this. People in grand theft auto are not alive, we kill them in the game, so what? I have played GTA san andreas, and though it would be fun to do the hooker thing. BORING. Yes, i know about hot coffee mod, but the actual 'do it in your car' is just your car shaking from side to side.

Killing a GTA person is animated blood. We see blood all the time on TV, movies what have you. So if your dad says you can't play oblivion, tell him he can't watch 24, house or anything else. And before showing him full length times of playing oblivion, get rid of your nude mod!

Cheers,
Sarnas

While I disagree with your father's arguments, it is his responsibility to check the ESRB rating of your games before you play them. Oblivion is currently rated M (how'd that happen?), although I'd probably consider a T rating more realistic. If you're under the age(s) recommended by the ESRB, then it's his responsibility to choice to keep you from playing it.

I've been playing games since 1996, since I was nine years old; those games included Wolfenstein 3D and Duke Nukem 3D. Have games affected me? Of course they have. Am I a murderer? No. But I am aggressive and competitive.

So, it's completely up to your father, assuming you're younger than the ESRB rating suggests. Is it fair? I really don't know. Are his arguments correct? Probably not. But should there be no control over video game content? That's the question...

[EDIT] TV and movies are usually much more violent that video games. There's little doubt about that. Then again, there are content controls for that.

I live in Canada, where pretty much anybody can see any film. I don't entirely disagree with the system. We aren't a violent culture, and we aren't becoming one.

Our favorite layer named Jack, I have one of the T rated ones.

so what your saying is that oven cleaner can remove paint from plastic models? and after that, you take a toothbrush to your plastic model, and the paint just comes off?

Ah, right... I dislike Jack as much as anyone. But one of the main defences against his arguments is that an effective content rating system already exists in the ESRB. Again, it's a parent's choice to allow his or her children to play games that are rated for an older age group.

If you can convince him to let you play, then that's fine, but it is ultimately his choice to make.
