WYSIWYG Gretchin

So I finally bought a box of gretchin. I've been using empty bases to represent them in all the games I've been playing so far. Me and a buddy use a lot of subbing with various races to make our 1000 point armies work. I know I can't play in any local tournaments or campaigns because of the WYSIWYG rule. I know it's a strict rule and I understand but then I get my box of gretchin and the models have ones with just the grot pistols (which I believe according to my Codex is all they get. No other weapons) but there are a few different ones. One has a pistol in each of his hands, a few have grenades, and a couple of knives (choppas?) in the other hand. I know gretchin are cute and silly and good meat shields so is this just an exception to the rule? Or is the WYSIWYG not as strict as I believe it to be? I'm going with my first theory.

Grots don't have any different weapon options correct?

If not, then it doesn't matter what you give them. If an opponent gets uppity about the use, say that they are throwing the knives/grenades/dreadnought leg at the people to represent the shooting. >:D

Re: WYSIWYG Gretchin

1 - they arent pistols, they are assault 1 weapons. This means that the grot with 1 in each hand doesnt get a bonus attack in close combat, nor any with the knives

2 - All grots have at least 1 grot blaster, so you dont have to say "im throwing my knife at you" because they all have a blaster each (Exception to the one holding a stikkbomb, who you can treat as one)

3 - The one with the stikkbomb you can alternatly use as a normal grot (no he doesnt get stikkbombs) OR you can use him as an ammo runt, just stick some spare ammo on his base too, make it looking like he is giving your warboss/big mek/kannons more ammunition of some kind.

Hope this helps

I really wouldn't worry - I use a combination of the new plastic grots and the Ogre Gnobblars to get my quota of 60 grots.

Never had any complaints.

Re: WYSIWYG Gretchin

You're fine. WYSIWYG isn't there to prevent you from having from modeling, it's there to avoid abuse. If you have an Ork with a big shoota and claim it's a rokkit or claim your Trukk is a Battlewagon, things like that is what WYSIWYG is there to prevent. It's fine for friendly games, as you know, but frowned on in tournaments and such. It's all about ease of recognition, I can view your army and immediately know what is what and not have to remember the 8 different models that aren't what they appear to be. Grots are Grots, whether or not they are holding a grenade or not isn't going to impact WYSIWYG. Same thing with stikkbombz for example. You can take them on Boyz but you don't have to actually represent them, we just assume they have them. Small wargear items like that don't have to be represented.

Thanks a lot guys. I like the idea of making an extra grot as an ammo runt with a little alteration. Are creative things like this acceptable in tournaments or is it recommended to follow Citadel's intentions of their parts?

Re: WYSIWYG Gretchin

For Orks you can be pretty creative. GW has always encouraged it, and many of the Ork kits were designed to make it easier. Converting one of the plastic grots to be an Oiler, Ammo Runt, or Orderly is certainly fine. The main idea with WYSIWYG is that your opponent should be able to tell what something is just by looking at it. A Grot with extra ammo belts or a wrench should be obvious.

Hell, you can use rhinos with boyz in tournaments (called looted wagons)

Gretchin have no chance of differing equipment. All they have is Grot Blastas. Even the plastic kit itself randomizes their weapons with a variety of rifles and dual wielded pistols. You only really need to worry about WYSIWYG on the units that actually have equipment options. ;)

I'd imagine you can use whatever you want on them, as long as its clear that they have a grot blasta.

So if I had a Nob with a Big Choppa, and he had one, and a Power Klaw at the same time, like one in each hand, technically thats ok? I'm pretty sure
