Default Wot's dis then? (help starting orks?)

I picked up the codex at my local GW (despite it being the single wierdest day ever) and thumbing through it I have no idea where to start the army.

I like the craziness of orks so things that you don't know what it will do are fun and I like ork tanks. my play style would be along the lines of running forwards into close combat with lots of dakka and 'urty things.

What tips sould I know, what sort of ork armies go well and the kinds of setups used?

Are you going for a competitive army, or one that you can sit back and laugh at when random shit happens?

Just one for casual gaming, obviously not one that is really difficult to win but so it is fun and not a bulldozer of a list.

I made a fun list yesterday. I played Droids_Rule with it last night and won against his Spacewolves. It was a bloodbath, believe me. I was down to 2 Deff Dreads, Zagstruk and Da Vulcha Boyz, a couple Trukks, and 2 units of warbikes (Both had a wounded nob and a warbike left) and he was annihilated. The list was:
Big Mek w/ KFF w/ 18 Ard boyz with Sluggas and Choppas w/ Ard Nob w/ PK and Bosspole all in a Wagon

4 Units of 10 boyz w/ PK nob with Bosspole all in Trukks

2 units of 9 Warbikes with PK Nob with Bosspole

And 2 Deff Dreads with 4 CCW.

Overall the list was a lot of fun, although the Bikes got tied up later in the game, and the Deff Dreads were too slow to be much of use, but once you jam a Landraider with boyz, 3 PKs do serious damage.

If you want a casual army the first thing to do is pick a theme and run with it. Decide what you like and then make a whole army based off that idea. Either Bad Moon pirates, Blood Axe special ops, mechanized Deathskulls, or whatever. If you just want fun, I'd suggest taking a warphead too.

Warpheads make everything more fun. I run one in all of my armies.

Warpheads are cool, and the model itself is quality, however, when you roll 1 and then re-roll 1! d'oh!
But as for a start for an ork army i got the AOBR and i cant recommend it more highly, mainly cos the koptas in it are awesome!
i then went on a decent website where i got 20 boys for £10!
i personally love lootas and meganobz, the only problem with the latter in no inv save! but still on a plus 2 you cant really complain.

Well, if you really want an invuln for MANZ, you could always take Dok Grotsnik…
Or, you could load them into a Trukk/Battlewagon and let that absorb fire until they charge in.
