Default I love deffkoptaz!

Hi all,

So I was playing in a tournament over the weekend and I had great experiences with the following two units of deffkoptaz:

"Da Flyin' Tankbustaz" 5 Deffkoptaz
Twin Linked Rokkit Launchers

"Da Black Baron" Deffkopta
Twin Linked Rokkit Launcher, Buzzsaw

I went in to these games thinking they were a marginal anti-tank choice at best. I really added them in to fill out points. I came out of the tournament thinking that they may be one of the most useful units we have.

In my second game of the day, against Necrons, I turbo-boosted my big squad in front of an equally big (5) squadron of destroyers. I then proceeded to seize the initiative, shoot two destroyers out of the air and then krump/break the remainder in close combat. This removed the necrons largest mobility/firepower threat and helped me win the game handily.

In my third game, I was up against a REALLY nasty tau list that featured three hammerheads. The big deffkopta squad spent its time redeploying and blowing up crisis suits but this was really 'Da Baron's' game. Outflanking, he came on in turn three. I luckily got him on the flank where my opponents hammerheads were clustered.. First turn he didn't even have to charge as he got a beautiful rear armor shot with his rokkit and destroyed a hammerhead. Thanks to the cover provided by the wreck (and some bad luck by the tau player) he survived. In the next turn he wrecked another hammerhead. With their mobile anti-horde crippled, the Tau were swarmed by my infantry.

While there was a certain amount of luck necessary for both of my games to proceed as they did (seizing the initiative in the second game, getting Da Baron on the correct side in the third), I think that both units are very useful and competitive choices for games in general. In both cases, it was the scout ability that proved most useful.

Anyone else have favorite deffkopta unit builds or strategies?

I pretty much run a "Black Baron" variant. Often Rokkits will either miss or roll a 1 for AP so the Buzzsaw is to give a second chance to pop a tank.

Oh definitely. I forgot to mention that the second hammerhead died to the buzzsaw not the rokkit. I have such bad luck with my rokkitz usually that I think of the buzzsaw as the primary weapon and the rokkit as more of an afterthought. ;D

In my opinion they are point for point one of the best anti-armor units we have, plus they're Orks with T5, two wounds and a 4+ save, so not shabby in assault either.

I hate to bring this up, but the only thing that MIGHT be better than a Deffkopta is a Rokkit Buggy...
But this is an age old debate that always boils down to:
If it works for you, then use it!

As far as fluff goes, I LOVE Deffkoptas, even though they NEVER EVER survive a game with me (I only field 2, both TL Rokkits, one also with a saw) mostly due to points as I just can't bear to liquidate other forces to give them more units... They do however, make great harassing units, and the saw is wonderful.

Recently had a game where a unit of Chaos Bikers (no Power Fist, yay!) attacked a unit of Turbo'd Deffkoptas. Their shooting did nothing, and when they charged, they managed to get ONE wound (granted bad rolling on his part, and great saves on mine, but what can you do some days you know ). The Buzzsaw hit two of them and then broke the bikers, making them flee off the board. Not bad for a turn one kill. (Although they didn't live past turn 3...)

Oh, and they are also really really good at escorting units off the board. Even marines with ATSKNF can't rally if you're within 6"

Best,
-BT

I will have to agree that deffkoptas are great; the best part is that the models are great and easy to convert. I've had koptas live through entire battles a few times, but I don't expect it. I expect them to get in my opponenets face, and force them to shoot down my crazy aeronaughts. Hopefully before they die they will be able to pop a tank/transport/walker or assault and kill/tie up some nasty shooty unit.

They have performed well for me and I think I'll probably always have some over 1000 points. I am toying with the idea of making unique models to take advantage of the WAC system. They won't be as cost effective, but they should live longer. Worst thing about them is their leadership.

I love Deffkoptas too for their flexibility and toughness. Plus with Grotsnik you can give them Cybork bodies making them even tougher. I am planning to use the Deffkopta rules to represent Ork Mecha.

MagicJuggler:
Cybork Deffkoptas seem like a crazy, yet fun idea If only there was a viable way to give them FNP without slowing them down... Now that would be a nasty unit!

Slight update on the whole Rokkit Buggy vs Deff Kopta deal:
Tried the Rokkit Buggies last night, and they at least stayed around the whole game, but kept getting stunned all the while and didn't do too much. Still, being not blown up all the time was nice, but not being much of a threat was kind of wiffy as well...
And yes, sadly enough, bolters are still a bit of a threat as glances vs open-topped vehicles are fairly nasty as immobilzed=lost buggy in squads.

Best,
-BT

Sadly, FNP is beyond their means. Imagine Nobkoptas...(drools). If Biker Nobs weren't cheesed out enough as is...I was thinking of using the Cybork Bodies to represent looted Tau Shield Generators on the koptas, the 5+ being due to Orky experimentz and wutnots. Then again, I almost considered using Warbikes to represent Tread-Orks...

I think what puts me over the top is the CC ability of the Koptaz. The way they tied up (and took out - but that was luck) the destroyers in my second game was just beyond cool. They could easily do the same with devestators and other dedicated shooting units. Buggies can block LOS but sure can't tie people in close combat.

As Scoutfox said, leadership is their major liability. But this can be mitigated somewhat by squad size. When taking a squadron of five, I never had to test for LD outside of close combat (they got run down by a nasty herald in a chariot in the first game). Squadrons of one obviously never have to test.
