Default Da Art o' da Warboss - Becoming a Clan

Da Art o' da Warboss - Becoming a Clan
by Zenai a.k.a. Warboss Nezfang Skargut

Da Boyz are here
The cry of Waaargh is shouted on a thousand worlds as
the Orks rampage through the universe on their holy war.
Smoke-belching Ork Gargants stamp across the battlefield,
smashing all resistance and leaving a trail of destruction in their wake.
Nobz control and direct their forces as the boyz
charged madly at the enemy, bolters blazing.
Stormboyz march in precise ranks, Madboyz gibber and prance,
Painboyz administer their own unique brand of mendin'.
Great Battlewagons lurch over the ravaged landscapes,
escorted by flotillas of whooping Orks revving their bikes and buggies.
Behind the front, Weirdboyz channel the psychic energies
of the battle-crazed army into blasts of pure psychic power.
Huge herds of Gretchin and Snotlings are driven into enemy
ranks to overwhelm by sheer force of numbers alone.
Surely no other race in the universe loves war so much as the Orks.

There's probably a thousand WAAAGH!!! going on across the vastness of the Galaxy whether it is against each other or one of many denizens of the Milky Way Galaxy. The Orks are all united in one thing; fighting and winning. This includes fighting each other and winning! Even though the Orks all agree on this one philosophy, each Orks does it differently. One Ork likes to use his Choppa to smack his opponent around, one Ork grabs his Shoota and go “DAKKA! DAKKA! DAKKA!” on his opponent while another Ork will get his Trukk and run over his opponent again, again and again and some more and a little bit more and again and finally, once more. The Orks are no different than any other race in the galaxy when it comes to internal factions whose ideas differ to one another. In this article, I will discuss the various tribes and clans of the WAAAGH!!! and how to represent them on the tabletop.

Goffs
Orks from the Goff Clan respects strength and violence more than the Ork from the other tribes and clans. They're the very symbol of what most Orks wants to be; bigger, tougher, meaner and greener. Along with their brutality and very violent nature, Goffs are also known by the high number of Ork Boyz (more than all the other tribes and clans anyway). So, it isn't uncommon to see a sea of green bodies charging towards their enemies, shouting at the top of their lungs, “WAAAGH!!!” But what is uncommon is Goffs using kunnin' tricks such as camouflage or hiding behind cover. They rather much charge, fight, win and repeat.

How to represent them:
Army-wise: To represent their might numbers of Ork Boyz (mightier than most Orks tribes and clans anyway), it is appropriate to take 3+ mobs of 20+ Ork Boyz and furthermore, armed with good ol' Choppa and Slugga. Shootas are for Flash Gitz as Goffs prefer getting stuck in and whacking left and right with their Choppas. Stormboyz and Warbikerz are acceptable in a Goff-theme army as they represent the Goffs need to get into close combat as soon as possible. But overall, go for a Ork Horde army (more Hordy than most Ork armies anyway).

Model-wise: Assault on Black Reach (AoBR) Orkz are a cheap way to get an Ork army plus they're already armed with Slugga and Choppa. Black should be their primary color as well as painting Checks and Dags as the Goffs don't see any real reason to display colorful uniforms and such.

Evil Sunz
If you're not riding on wheels, you ain't no Evil Sunz. Anything less means you're a Foot-sloggin' Grot. Evil Sunz Orks are known for their fast vehicles and their love to go at the speed of WAAAGH!!! which is pretty much going at maximum speed whenever possible.....actually, they do it all the time and only stopping to crash into their enemy with a might Ker-runch! From Trukks to Bikez, the Orkz of the Evil Sunz Clan will build them and ride them. Mekz are pretty much a common sight in their settlements (which doesn't last very long as they always migrate to find new prey and new places to loot) by setting up garages and workshops to build and maintain the many vehicles warband. Every Evil Sunz will tend to their vehicle as if it was their mighty steed lovingly and with utmost care (When I mean utmost care, I mean not breaking their wheels fixing on a new engine or new fuel injector). Evil Sunz are also affiliated with the Kult of Speed (KoS).

How to represent them:
Army-wise: Anything from the Fast Attack is acceptable except Stormboyz. They ain't on wheelz :P Also, every unit must be on or a vehicle itself. This includes Warboss and Nobz riding on Warbikes, Trukks or Battlewagons and Ork Boyz on Trukks. Warbikerz are a common foot wheel-soldier of the Evil Sunz tribe and Wazdakka Gutsmek allows you to take Warbikerz as a Troop Choice thus an alternative if you feel Trukks ain't your thing. Battlewagons, though a Heavy Support, is a welcome addition to any Evil Sunz/KoS list. Same goes for Looted Wagons for those without the option to take Trukks as a Dedicated Transport like Burna Boyz. A Big Mek should always be around when there's something needs a fixin'. KoS list that includes a Big Mek will often equipped them with Kustom Force Field (KFF) to protect their vehicles from incoming enemy fire and to repair their wheelz if the needs arises.

Model-wise: An Ork Battleforce gives you a good foundation for your own KoS list as it comes with 20 Ork Boyz, a Trukk and 3 Warbikerz. Getting another Trukk will give you 3 Troop Choice on wheelz. Red is the favourite color of the Evil Sunz Orks as it is believe to make their vehicle go FASTA! so it's natural choice for KoS Orks and vehicles.

Bad Moons
They're the richest Gitz in all of Orkdom. This is probably where you can find those few extra teef for that nice Shoota you've been laying your eyes on. The Bad Moons play a very important role in Ork Society as Bankerz, Merchants and anything that got to do with money teef. Bad Moons settlements can be considered the financial center of the Orkity where Orks ply their trade selling everything that Ork needs from Choppas to Power Klaws, Sluggas to Deffguns, Warbikes to Battlewagon etc. It is also common for Meks to hang around Bad Moons as they probably have the teef to buy the Mek's over-priced bargain-priced products!

How to represent them:
Army-wise: For a solid Troop Choice, Shoota Boyz would be more appropriate as they have more teef to spend and Shootas are good buy for any Ork. They can either go Foot-Slog it or get on a Trukk, this is up to the Warboss or Big Mek in question Nobz and Flash Gitz is the signature unit of any Bad Moon Army either having 2 small mobs or 1 big mob of Nobz. Refer to my article: Nobz; The Crème de la Crème of the Orks

Model-wise: As a Pimp Ork Army, having more Nobz than the usual Ork Army would be a good step towards having a Bad Moon Army. A box or 2 of the new Nob Box Set will give you a solid units of Nobz or Flash Gitz. A Battlewagon will also be a good addition. After all, your Nobz has to go in style and the Battlewagon speaks for itself by being the biggest, meanest, loudest wagon that any Ork can get.

Snakesbites
The Orks of the Snakebite Clan distaste technology as they believe fighting the ol' fashion way is best e.g. using Choppas instead of Shootas. What they lack in Orky Technology, they make up for it by breeding the best Squigs around. Snakebite Squigs are well-known for their extra ferociousness and deliciousness. Snakebite Orks are also quite immune to most toxins as one of their “Rite of Passage” for their Yoofs, they're bitten by various snakes and spiders as well as pretty much anything with poisons and toxins in them so to toughen up the Yoofs. Despite their lack of technology, the Snakesbites are opponents not be trifled with as they're as dangerous as any Orks and are backed up by massive number and variety of squigs in their pens.

How to represent them:
Army-wise: Anything that's got to do with Technology (mostly) is out for Snakebite List but that shouldn't stop you from taking Trukks and vehicles or should I say; Riding Squigs! Yes, that's right. Any of the vehicles can be represented by a ridable squig. Basically, Snakesbites should be represented by a whole load of boyz much like the Goffs. Along with your mass ranks of Boyz (either Choppa or Arrer Boyz), Squigs should accompany the Snakebites into battle. This can range from Boar-riders (Count as Warbikerz) to Squiggoths (Battlewagon, preferably with Deff Rolla). Fancy that Troll model and of need of a Walkers in your list? Use them as Count as Deff Dreads or Killa Kanz! See the list below to know the limitations to your Army List. Also note, if you're interested in a Feral Ork Army, Snakebites are an acceptable alternative.

Model-wise: You got a Warhammer Fantasy Orc & Goblin Army? If yes, then you have a Snakebite Army. If not, well get yourself one then. Here's Count as list and all this is from the Warhammer Fantasy Orc & Goblin as well as Lizardmen model range:
  • Warboss or Nob with Waaagh!!! Banner – Orc Warboss
  • Warboss on Warbiker - Azhag the Slaughterer, Orc Boss on Wyvern, Gorbad Ironclaw, Grom the Paunch of the Misty Mountain and Orc Warlord on Boar
  • Warboss on Foot - Grimgor Ironhide, Black Orc Big Boss and Borgut Facebeater
  • Weirdboy - Orc Shaman Foot and Mounted
  • Nobz – Black Orcs
  • Slugga Boyz - Orc Warriors Regiment
  • Shoota Boyz – Orc Arrer Boyz
  • Gretchins - Goblin Regiment and Night Goblin Regiment
  • Trukk – Lizardmen Stegadon
  • Buggies - Lizardmen Stegadon
  • Warbikerz – Orc Boar Boyz
  • Deffkopta - Lizardmen Terradon Rider
  • Battlewagon - *You probably need something a bit bigger than a Stegadon, a Squiggoth model might do or a Stegadon and Snotling Pump Wagon combined together*
  • Deff Dread – Trolls
  • Killa Kans – Trolls
  • Big Gunz - Goblin Doom Diver, Goblin Spear Chukka and Goblin Rock Lobber

Blood Axes
Blood Axe Orks are probably the sneakiest and most kunnin' Orks around. They will use every dirty trick in the book to win even retreating! They're also probably the polar opposite of the Goffs. The Blood Axe commonly use camouflage on their persons so they blend in better with cover as much as an Ork can anyway. Blood Axe are known to copy Imperial strategies and tactics and even using their own vehicles and equipment against their former owners.

How to represent them:
Army-wise: Kommandos comes to mind when we talk about the Blood Axes. Making extensive use of them as well as Deep-Striking Stormboyz (with Zagstruk, of course). The purpose of both of these units is to catch your opponent by surprise instead of the usual mobs after mobs of Ork Boyz slogging it and can be seen right away. Looted Wagons are a good option if you're a fan of Boomwagons or just need a transport for your Burna Boyz. Your list should hold as much surprises as it can well, as much surprise you can get out of the Ork Codex.

Model-wise: Paint camouflage on everything basically. Also convert vehicles from the other armies like for example; Battlewagon from Land Raiders and Leman Russes, Looted Wagons and Trukks from Chimeras, Rhinos, Wave Serpeants and Devilfishes.

Deathskulls
Deathskull Orks play the part of thieves and looters in Ork Society. Without them, Ork would be.......uhm, not have as many stuff! Who would quickly kill just so they can loot the battleground clean? Who would bring back their loot to be auctioned off so that every Ork especially Meks get their gubbinz? Who would steal the property of another Ork so that Ork has to buy has to buy another thus spurring the Orky Ekonomy? The Deathskulls, of course! As any other Ork, Deathskulls has their own superstitions. Their paint their loot and property as well as themselves blue so their gods would protect them from harm. Meks make great use of the loot brought back by these Lootas and often hire them as Salvagers.

How to represent them:
Army-wise: Lootas and Looted Wagons! Nothing says Deathskulls than having Lootas in your lists. Burna Boyz are good as well and they can make good use of the Looted Wagon and you're probably go straight for your opponent anyway :P But as always this is going to be one of those common Horde ork armies we've been talking about and seen again and again.

Model-wise: Like the Blood Axes, loot their vehicles and Ork it up! Also, make use of non-Ork weapons like Boltguns as Shootas, Heavy Bolter as Big Shootas. Loot everything!

Summary
As you can see, having theme with your Ork army is only limited by your own imagination. You can pretty much make any theme ranging from a Pirate theme to a Cyber-Punk theme. And as you may have noticed as well, it's a great poorhammer army as you can loot and convert models from other armies or even other games. So, create your warband as you like. The possibility are endless. Once again, C&C is always welcomed

Crikey! This crazy clown causes commotion like the coming of Christ. Contained in a circle corrupted by crackheads and carnal cravings, he creates no concession to callous cheaters concentrating on nought but cock. Certainly, still a curious and cordial cavalier in the countenance of crazed cads, curs and creeps who condemn courtesy as something corny. No cloud could collapse his crushing crescendo of comical crowing and crimson coiffure. This conjecture on culture comes circumlocutive, consequently...

Just a quick comment, Zenai...

Why do Bad Moons have lots of Weirdboys? The way I understand, mainly primitive tribes (i.e. Snakebites) or just very numerous Klans (i.e. Goffs) have lots of Weirdboys, reason being spirituality or availability of Waaagh!-energy...

Cheers,
-Bone

Hmmm....strange. It was from one of my old sources of fluff. I'll look for it to confirm but for now, I'll remove it
