Default Orks counter to the soul grinder

I had my first game using orks last night, it was also my first game against daemons.

I almost got a draw but ended up three and a half inches away from an objective and lost.

He had 2 soul grinders! They are really nasty, with armour 13 I needed 6's with my power claws and rockits and didn't get one all game. I use a foot slogger army.

Anyone faced these things and won? Would you tell me how?

Just so you know power claws are strength 9 on the charge (10 with warboss), so you need a 4 to glance, and a 5/6 to penetrate.

I didn't manage to get the charge unfortunately, soul grinders are also fast as well as tough.

Why strength 9? I thought the strength bonus is added before its doubled by the claw?

Bonuses like that are always added after you double strength. Can't remember what page that's on though.

As for dealing with the Soul Grinder, rokkits are of course an option. Take a unit of 10 Tankbustas and you stand a good chance of doing something to it, especially if you can assault it using tank hammers and tankbusta bombs.

There's the Zzap gun, though not the most reliable weapon, it has a chance to cut through AV13 easily. In this case I'd take 3 Zzap guns to play it safe. Remember, each time they glance or penetrate they cause crew shaken no matter what and is given in addition to the result you roll. If you want more reliable artillery with a chance of busting its armor, you can take Kannons.

Of course there's power klaws, as you know, but the trick is to deliver them fast, like Stormboyz with a PK, a Battlewagon with a unit of Boyz having a PK (BW to help ensure you live to deliver it), or even a handful of Trukks with PKs in there. Doing it on foot probably just won't happen.

Also, on the round they come down, the Soul Grinders haven't moved, hence are relatively easier to hit. Rather nice if they happen to DS in a useful position.

I like the tankbuster models but not impressed with the point cost or their glory hogs rule.

Unfortunately soul grinders ignore stunned and shaken results. They also are walkers and if they have moved or not doesn't make a difference to your chance to hit them.

I think I'm going to have get a battlewagon.

Your Pk are on Nobs who are 1+ str higher than a boy thus making them str8 if they get charge or str9 if they charge. Looks like you were using the strength of an Ork boy.

Or, take some chances with a SAG. With range 60", it has all sorts of weird possibilities to crunch the thing quite efficiently randomly but very spectacularly.

( Or kill the big mek carrying it... : )

Actually deep striking counts as having moved as far as I know. So you'd hit 'em on a 4+ the turn they come in.

Walkers are not vehicles in terms of Close Combat since they have a WS. You will go WS to WS to hit it no matter if it stays still or if it moves 1 million inches.
