So I am starting orks and I have like 10 boys and a warboss. Before I get anything other than boyz, what theme should I pick? I know of footsloggin, speed freak, and big mek. I am not quite sure what those themes mean though and im not sure if there are any more themes. Could someone list the themes and what they consist of?

You should really just ho for whatever theme you feel like, rather than listening to other people go
"ZoMG TEh footsloggaz 4re TeH H4X0rz!!1!1337!" Anywho, if you like the feel of a Big Mek army stompin' their way across the board, go for it! Heck, you don't even need to go with the pre-established themes! Just make one of your own, look at the 'Ravensquig' armies, for example. A few people found a niche in the current codex and designed an army of their liking to fill said niche.

I totally agree. Just look at the pics and the rules for whatever unit you like. Only thing to remember in 40k is that Troops should form the core of your army. This is not a set rule, personally, my Tau force concist of the minimum troops allowed and a lot of fast things. Orks can do whatever you like, the can be shooty, choppy or fast, or a mix of those three. 2 or 3 units of boyz (20+ in each) is good for a 1000 pts game, one of them may be in a trukk. From here on out just experiment with whatever you like, be it a lot of warbikers and wartrakks, a hell lotta killa kans and deff dreads, burna boyz, tankbustas, a lot of looted wagons or whatever. You can make almost ANYTHING work with orks, they're extremely verstatile (exept they usually shoot bad, but a lot)

Beside the three themes you listed, Sr. Moomeyer, there are quite a few. Those three are the ones that GW shows in the codex, but beyond those there's countless others. Some of the more popular 'niche' lists include the Deffwing, Ravensquig, Grot Armies.
Grot armies, as you could guess, I'm sure, are formed mostly of Grots. Armies like this usually have nearly everything modeled to include grots in one way or another: a Mega-Armoured Grot as the Warboss/Big Mek, Grots driving Wartrakks and what-not, et cetera. The Deffwing and Ravensquig are both green parodies of the Dark Angels Deathwing and Ravenwing. The Deffwing is an army composed of entirely Mega-Armour. Two Mega-Armoured Warboss are taken and then your troops and elites are filled with Mega-Armoured Nobs. Armies like this can be extremely hard hitting, but it can be difficult to bring them to bear properly. Transportation for Deffwing armies is essential. When it comes to modeling a Deffwing army, it's always more fun to go all out on the Deathwing theme. Land Raiders make excellent Battlewagons and Rhino's are a nice, cheap source for Looted Wagons. The Ravensquig, just like the Ravenwing, is an extremely fast army. Either two Warboss (on bikes) are taken to enable you to take fill your Troops requirement with Bikers Nobs, or some players prefer to take Wazdakka and employ his 'Da Biker Boss' special rule to load up on Biker Mobz. As one would expect, the entire army is mounted up and fast moving. A 'pure' Ravensquig army would consist of nothing more than Bikes and Deffkoptas. For some extra fun, you could use looted Land Speeders for Deffkoptas and Space Marine bikes would be fun to loot, too. Hope that helped, -Grandpa Ducky |

BigMek: Lead by two BigMeks with either kFF or SAG. This army using units like deffkoptas, Lootas, Khans, Burnas, big gun batteries and other mechincal devices.
Speed Freaks: Everything has a set of wheels or some perpellers. Every squad of boyz is mounted in a trukk or wagon. All your support comes from buggies and Deffkoptas. Storm Boyz would be acceptable as well. Essentially everything must move fast as hell or its not in the list. Footsloggers: No vehicles just a large mass of boyz walking across the battlefield. Essentially as long as they are walking then you can use it. THis list is all about having as many orks/grots as you can on the battlefield. |
