So I was thinking the other night about making a completely unique Ork army, but I was having troubles coming up with something that hasn't been done quite a few times before. I wanted something where every last unit was customized in some significant way and I wanted to keep the Ork theme going. Then it hit me: what about an army of experiments from a Mad Dok's workshop!
I immediately got the picture in my head of massive beasts, more monster than Ork, being herded into battle. Looking at the Ork army list, though, it lacks any Monstrous Creatures and I definitely wanted them in there... I also wanted to steer clear of vehicles... So what army list has a ton of Monstrous Creatures, no vehicles, and specializes and dealing out melee death by the bucket load? The 'Nids of course! Following are my basic ideas so far on the army. I'm currently looking at two possible builds for the list. One is led by Sportikuz, an escaped experiment who has slaughtered his handlers and freed his fellow experiments, leading them to a most bloody freedom. Synapse, as documented below, would take on the name of the "I am Sportikuz" Rule, showing the experiments undying loyalty to their savior and their willingness to fight to the death fearlessly in his name. The other option I'm looking at would be to have the army still in the hands of the Doks. I'd probably us mostly Warriors (modeled as detailed below) as an HQ, then, and Synapse would be justified by equipping the Doks with remote controls. Tyrant I've named him Sportikuz. He was an Ork who got fed up with the constant experiments and killed off the Dok, freeing the other experiments, and leading them in a bloody rampage across the galaxy. I'll have to incorporate some "I am Sportikuz" scene into his fluff... Modeling wise, I'm not sure how I'm going to make him... I'd rather not have to try and sculpt the whole thing, but he'll need to be huge to justify his Monstrous Creature status. Maybe using some WHFB Orgres, but beefing them up and adding guns and blades attached in odd places. Although using a WHFB Giant might work, too... I'd just need to sculpt my own head and beef up his lanky musculature. Here are my basic thoughts so far: Tyrant Guard Sportikuz's faithful buddies from back at the lab. All three of them are massive with layer after layer of muscle grafted onto their already brutish frames have turned them into killing machines, even by Ork standards. But the Doks weren't happy with just that. Painful surgeries replaced their limbs with weapons and attached countless pointy things all over their body. Huge muscled Orks with various close-combat weapons sticking out. I might use some WHFB Ogres or something similar to give it the right stature... Broodlord Another possible way to represent Sportikuz. Of course this one would be significantly smaller, and he wouldn't be able to take the Tyrant Guard. He does, however, require a retinue of 'Stealers to be taken, who could just as well be used to represent Sportikuz's most loyal of followers. Warriors Mad Doks in spidery armour and sporting remote controls. I can cover their armour in pointy bits and blades to justify their ability to dish out Melee Death. The remotes can be used to represent their Synapse status, controlling their minions by zapping their minds with radio waves. :P Lictors Some sort of chameleon-Ork hybrid, maybe? I'm not too sure on this one... Genestealers Beefed-up Ork, probably. Sportikuz's elite followers or the shock troops of a Mad Dok-led army. I might use some WHFB Ogre Bulls to represent them Hormagaunt and Hormagaunts The lurching masses. Way too many options for modeling these guys... I might go with a combination of Squig-brained Orks, Robo-squigs, Mutie-Boyz, and beefed-up Grots. I can see these as potentially the most fun to make... Ripper Swarms Either Attack Snots, Attack Grots, or rabid Squiglings. They're going to have to be something that'll fit several to a swarm base. Ravener Not clue how to represent tunneling... Suggestions welcome. Gargoyle Again, not sure how to do these. Possibly winged or maybe even built-in jet packs. Spore Mines Not sure. Possible lobotomized Boyz strapped full of explosives? Suggestions definitely welcome. Zoanthorpes Mad Boyz in psych-enhancing goo tanks of doom. If I was a Dok, I'd sure want to know what made Mad Boyz so special and weaponize it, which I think is exactly what I'll have them do. Modeling wise, they'll be somewhat similar to my Grot Tank, I think, but with a tank on top and a Wyrdboy inside. Add a bunch of wires and done. Biovores Again, not too sure how I'd do these guys... Carnifex What happens when you throw a spruce of Boyz, a 'fex, and a Sentinel in a box, add a slosh of super glue, and shake well? I don't know, but I'm sure it'll fill this slot. :P Synapse Depending on the inclusion of Sportikuz in the army I'd rename this the "I am Sportikuz" rule. His followers are so faithful to him that they'll never retreat and gladly throw themselves on the bayonets of the enemy with his name on their lips... Those that still have lips. If Sportikuz wasn't leading the army, thusly assuming it's still in the hands of the Doks, I'd probably justify it by modeling the Doks using remote controls to control the masses. Add little antenna sticking out of everyone's heads and we'd be set. Hope you enjoyed, -Grandpa Ducky |
