Default My heart says shooty, but my head says choppy...

I have come to this section of the forum for some much needed advice. I have always loved the Orks, and the new miniatures range may well have convinced me to collect an army of them in the future. In particular, I love the idea of Orky customised gunz, and have always wanted to play a Flash Gitz mob. However, my regular opponent plays Tau, and I can't see a shooty Ork army doing well against the Greyskins. Overall, a choppy CC army seems to make the most tactical sense. However, this doesn't leave much scope for cool gun conversion. What should I do? Is there some sort of compromise I could reach?

Go and get your shooty army then. theres nothing wrong with it. Sure, they don't have an impressive BS. But they do get a bucket load of shots - a mob of 20 boys can potentially get off 42 strength 4 shots at 18" range. Thats enough to overwhelm any squad that you like. Combine it with some lootas for the long range support, the gitz for the assassin units to target those hard things, and maybe some trukk boys to tie in the highly shooty stuff and your laughing!!

Shoota boyz are wicked now. The only advantage slugga boyz have is an extra attack in close combat, which isn't as much of an as advantage as before since they lose the 4+ saving choppa rule.

Our shoota boyz have more range and have twice as many shots, and if you charge they have 3/4 the amount of attacks as slugga boyz which is still a heck of alot. Against things like genestealers and marines and other scary assault units with high initiative your shoota boyz will carry the day because they can whittle things down before charging, thus reducing the amount of punishment your boyz take before they get to attack.

The battle report I posted yesterday showed me that shoota boyz work great but are also going to more of a target since they can actually do some damage on the way in.

So hang on...choppaz aren't heavy close combat weapons anymore? Sounds like shoota boyz are now a much better option now anyway - are they many more points than sluggaz?

I would say : go for it, shooty ork are more viable and fun then ever.

with the loss of the choppa rule a shoota boy is practicly on par (or better) than a slugga boy. 1 less atack for a gun, yes please !

*on a bad side. you will need a bucket of dice. but its always fun to roll 40 shots.

Thats how orks work. Dont tell me you dont need a bucket of dice if 20 orks reach the charge...?!

20 orks, 2 base+1 axe, +1 charge. Thats 4 apiece. Thats 80 attacks.

Ork players just need buckets of dice in general...

Shoota Boyz are great now, for all the reasons mentioned. Slugga Boyz still have their use though; that one extra attack adds up in larger mobs, so their more of a dedicated CC unit and less of an all-around unit in my view. So, going shooty doesn't mean you have to forsake stompin' some 'eads. They're still Orks after all!

Against Tau, you shouldn't need to have that extra attack unless you're trying to pummel the Shas'o in one turn (that happend to me on my first game as Tau...oh the horror...); so taking Shoota Boyz will give you that extra ranged power while still winning in CC.
