Default Leavin' Da Boyz at home; will it work?

As you've probably realised by now, it is entirely possible to field an Ork army with no "Boyz" units in it. Warbosses allow a single Nob / Meganob unit as Troops, Wazdakka allows a single Bike Mob as Troops, and Big Meks allow a single Def Dread as Troops. In short, by filling both HQ slots you can get some very unothadox core elements.

My question then is this; can this work? Can the Green Tide still succeed without the unwashed masses?

Yay, I get to correct Wargamer! ;D

Actually, Wazdakka allows Bikes to be taken as Troop choices - not just one, but up to 6

But apart from that, interesting idea. Someone mentioned a "Deffwing"-army a couple of weeks ago, that is all Meganobs in Battlewagons, and a couple of Deffdreads (or MORE Battlewagons).
"Green Scars" - Wazdakka and all Bikes.
"Deffstorm"-Loads of Deffdreds and Killakans.

Could work out nicely, but I guess you`d end up with a "Hit or Miss"-army - you`d eitehr win big or lose big.

Cheers,
-Bone

I think it can work, however lists like that are probably going to be situational, very dependent on things like terrain, who you are facing, what he/she's bringing, etc. The hard part with lists like that I think is in that they are harder to round out, you're putting your eggs in one basket, and we know what can happen by doing so. It'll require some finesse and good tactics to make lists like that overcome their shortcomings, but it's certainly doable in my view, and hell, it's just fun to do some different.

Woah, really? I just saw "Da Bike Boss" and assumed it was like the others.

Being a fan of the Big Mek and his creations, I might have a go at a Deffstorm army (...once I get the models), though as BossBonesaw said, those types of armies will probably be 'hit or miss' concidering how specialised they are.

Haha, the thread title reminds me of the quote from Dawn of War: "Puny Eldar, you can send 'alf da boyz 'ome!" ;D

No. Actually, you were right. :P

Damn. What do I keep my Codex next to my computer for?

Lesson learned. "Never correct Wargamer. He shall be always right, and He shall be always written with capital H."

Damn, that spoiled my Ravensquig army idea...

...or possibly not... it does say "mobs", not Mob, so you can take Bikes in your Troop Choice! >

You can take as many bike mobs as troops as you want with Wazzdakka.

I don't think it's a really good idea though. The best version of 'leave the boyz at home' list idea I've seen revolves around two biker warbosses, and two large nob squads on warbikes. And, it's a bit of a one-trick pony.

But, at least with a mad dok and all the upgrades, the two units you'll have on the table will be pretty resilient.

The problem with a normal warbiker mob is that they're really expensive, they come in small mobs, and they've only got Ld7, so it only takes a couple of casualties before they run off the table. At least, they would if you were rolling my dice for their Ld tests.

I think that, much like Sisters of Battle, the real strength of the ork codex is in the basic troop choice. In fact, the ork boyz give some pretty good competition to the Sisters of Battle for best point-for-point troops in the game. Leaving them home might make some themed lists possible, but I think that it weakens the army.

Actually, we were both right.

The GERMAN Codex say: 1 Mob of Warbikers may be taken as Troops.

The leaked .pdf (and the english Codex, I assume) says: MOBS of Warbikers.

Damn GW and their translating.

I'm hoping so since I'm working on a Deffwing army now.

I think the ability to swap around core choices is one of the best strengths in the new codex. The versatility of it is amazing.

Speaking of variant army lists, I was looking in the codex and under Mad Doc Grotsnik's entry, I find Da Big Doc rules wording unclear. Does it allow any unit in the army to have cybork bodies or just any unit he's attached to? If it's the former then we could have some crazy Orkron armies... Or would be be Necork?
