In reading through many of the lists on the Army List area, I really don't see anyone taking Skarboyz or 'Ard Boyz. I realize they cost more, and in the case of Skarboyz are no harder to kill then a Slugga, but it seems to me that if used correctly could be very effective.
I'm still working on getting my army together. Right now I can field 1,000 points if I use every single model I have, most of those models being Sluggas and Shootas. So I want to start working in some other units at this stage and had been considering Skarboyz and 'Ard Boyz. Right now I've not picked a clan and the only one that appeals to my style of play is Goffs, hence my Skarboy interest. Anyway, I guess the point of the post is for a bit of feedback on the above mentioned units. My plan is to of course field a core of Sluggas and Shootas but to also work in Skarboyz and 'Ard Boyz to be used for tactical assignments, I guess that's the best way I can word it. I figure I could spearhead an attack with 'Ard Boyz up front and a few Kans, other Boyz behind, or divert my elites to where I feel they are needed and draw fire of my core force. |

I use "ard boyz but I perfer to call them them Ultra Orks since they are painted in BLue, white and gold. I only deploy these fellows if I have a squad of grots as well or there is lots of cover for them. Essentially I do NOT want to throw them to the wolves or charge out from with them without some form of cover. My main opponent are the tau and they have the punch to ignore even the 'Ard boz armour save thus the grots. I attach my warboss to the grots to keep them in line better (Ld 10) and march them infront of the Ard Boyz. Now either the grots get shot up, nois biggie, or the Ard Boyz get a cover save now. I deploy them in 20 ork squads in this fashion.
However in the future I will be running them in 10 ork squads and mount them in looted rhinos. |

Skarboyz are a fantastic unit, especially when given burnas. Just expect to spend alot of points on them to be good, as your gonna need plenty of bodies to keep em living. As with all Ork units, you want to keep them spread out to avoid template death, and you want to give them some support, cause if the enemy really wants them dead than a 6+ save won't do much to help you. Skarboyz should usually be avoided in lower points games, although my brother and I just worked up a 750 tournie list with a 16 man unit of em and the list seems like it'll be effective. Oh yeh, in general Nobs are a waste of points on Skarboyz, as more str 4 choppa and burna cc attacks are worth alot more than fewer str 8 powerklaw attacks. Really, the only use for a nob in Skarz is to get a Gob/Horns, but even then if you take enough boyz mob rule should keep you alive.
As for 'Ard boyz, I've never fielded them or fought against them, but they seem like a solid objective holding unit. Again, just take lots of em, and in this case throwing shootas and big shootas on em might not be too bad of an idea.

When I first got into Orks, I really got into Orks. I bought about 3,000 points of stuff and spent the next two years modeling it all.
You know I have to admit that I kinda feel a little sorry for the poor blokes that win a dozen army box set models in some Games Workshop contest ............ the modeling and worse yet ................. the painting .............. I have a complete set of decked out Ard Boyz Boyz, with the Ard Boyz metal bodies, Black Ork Heads, yada yada ............. I think I've used them in all of five or six games. I have used Skarboyz at least four or five times as much. I think that the extra strength is a better bet than the extra armour. Frankly, at a 4+ save, the Ard Boyz get protection against Lasguns and weak small Blasta template ordnance/artillery weapons. That's about it. The Skarboyz really make a big difference in hand to hand. They can even glance against lightly armoured vehicles. A full mob can be murder on Landspeeders, even when having to hit on a six. 80 attacks on a charge cannot be ignored .................. The beauty of Skarboyz is that you can use a regular Slugga Boyz unit as Skarboyz. No special modeling required. Best Regards,

For the Skarboyz figured I'd just buy a box of Boyz and toss on some green stuff for scars and a few modeling knife gouges here and there.
The 'Ard Boyz I wasn't planning in fielding a bunch of them, well Ork standard-wise, but more of a distraction unit or a spearhead as needed. The Skarboyz were going to be my bigger focus and nice to see they play out as well as I had hoped they would. Thanks guys. |
