Their used to clear minefields, improve bigger units footing over difficult terrain, absorb enemy fire. No, I'm not writting about Imperial Guard Conscripts (although there are many similarities), I'm writting about Grots. Dumb Ol' Grots. But wait, are Grots really that dumb? Or are they better at manipulating their Ork `masters' then we might think?

Come on, lets here both sides on this fluff question. Grots got da smarts, yes or no!

Nope. Grot ain't smart....more technically able then the Orks on average, partly due to having smaller fingers....and I do think they should have an initiative increase to represent this. If grots were intelligent, they wouldn't steer bombs for a living.

Grots are more cunning than Orks. As cowardly as they are, they have to be just to survive. The fact that they are a slave class, held down by the Orks, precludes their being able to strike out on their own. However, in Rogue Trader it mentions that some worlds within the Ork-held systems are entirely Grot-controlled, operating with the same fragmented, Warlord-run system that the Orks use. Don't underestimate the abilities and intelligence of Grots. Are the workers too stupid to overthrow the priveleged classes? Of course not. But there are many, many issues that go into allowing oneself to be enslaved, for lack of a better word.

I am a firm believer that (fluff wise) Grots, like people, come in at all intellegence levels. Some are a bit dense. To quote FT, `some of them have the Caboose pulling the train'. But there are some sharp ones that can manipulate the system. Just a few carefully chosen words can cause an Ork to behave in a way thats advantageous to that particular Grot. Woe be to the Grot that gets busted doing this however!

Grots can be cunning....they are, i'll admit, on average cleverer then orks. But not cleverer enough to stay out of trouble.
