Default Necron Wraith Tactica

Necron wraiths are a model I often see people over look. They are fairly expensive considering they are single wound models with the toughness of space marines; however they have several characteristics that really make them useful.

Pros:

Very good invulnerable save

High initiative (faster than most troops)

High strength (wounds most troops on 2+ and can take down low back armor vehicles)

Fairly good number of attacks per model

Jet bike that ignores terrain

Cons:

Fairly expensive

One wound

Dies easily to massed fire

Considering these pros and cons it becomes obvious that wraiths have a very specific skill set. The reason I see so many Necron players leave their wraiths at home is because they are, to be blunt, crappy units when they don’t make use of their good stats. There are many uses for them and I always have at least one team in games that are 1500+ points.

Strategies

Protection for a Destroyer Lord

The most basic tactic is to have a Destroyer Lord join a team of wraiths to ensure that the Lord makes it safely into close combat. Because of wraiths are jet bikes they can easily keep up with the Lord while providing him with high invulnerable saves. This tactic is also useful because the wraiths can leave the lord when he is ready to assault and do something else that is useful, such as performing one of the other strategies below.

Tank hunting

Because of their high movement speed and high strength wraiths can make short work of any vehicle with rear armor value 10. This strategy is very cut and dry; while the rest of your army deals with other things, have your wraiths either meet the enemy’s transports head on, or have them hunt done the enemy’s long range vehicles.

Holding monstrous critters

Nothing is more annoy to your opponent then having 3 models hold up his wraith lord or hive tyrant for 3 or 4 turns. Basically the idea is to assault or be assaulted by a monstrous creature that you don’t have resources to kill but need out of the way. Because of their great invulnerable saves wraiths can hold a monstrous creature in assault for several turns. Considering how wraiths have higher initiative than most monstrous creatures and strength enough to wound them, the wraith may also score some wounds on the monstrous creature.

If a unit of 3 wraiths assaulted a wraithlord, the wraiths would go first causing a third of a wound on the first turn and a fourth of a wound on subsequent turns (with saving throws factored in). The wraithlord would then attack back causing about .277 wounds on the wraiths (with saves).

The main weakness of this strategy is the likeliness for there to be more enemy troops nearby that could counter charge the wraiths and kill them by simply causing too many wounds. This tactic is therefore best used on monstrous creatures who are by themselves or when you have back up units that can deal with the enemies troops, who the enemy might decide to attack instead of the wraiths.

This is also adaptable to heavy weapons teams or elite units with power weapons that need to be “distracted” for a few turns.

Massed Assault

Although it is very rare to see someone fielding 9 wraiths, I have done this before and it works surprisingly well. First turn the wraiths fly up 24 inches, or if you are playing against an assault army, you could have one unit fly up just in assault range of the enemy’s closest unit and the rest of the wraiths just out of range. Then, on the second turn, charge the enemy, and if your opponent charged the “bait” wraith team, your other wraiths should charge into the ongoing close combat.

The purpose of this strategy is to make use of the wraiths good offensive abilities and their high initiative. In a perfect scenario the enemy will be wiped out or greatly weakened before they ever even have a chance to attack you back. This also helps protect your wraiths from their main weakness; lots of normal attacks. As wraiths die just as easily from basic weapons and assault units as Necron warriors do, it is imperative that the enemy rarely has time to focus his/her fire or assault attacks on the wraiths.

This tactic is also great if you can get the Deceiver into close combat with the wraiths because of his own high initiative value. However the deceiver is a fairly slow unit and will be difficult for him to keep up with your wraiths. If you aren’t using the Deceiver than 2 Necron Lords are also great at aiding wraiths with this tactic. The lords can keep up with the wraiths and although they do not have exceptional initiative they can bring some much needed power weapons or warsythes into the assault. The lords can also aid the wraiths with a resurrection orb and some gunfire if they opt to keep their staffs of light.

If a unit of 10 space marines is assaulted by 9 wraiths and 2 lords on destroyers (in the second turn hopefully), you will have 36 attacks from the wraiths and 8 attacks from the lords. This will kill about 8 space marines. The 2 space marines that are left will most likely not kill anything. After combat is over the space marines will likely flee and most likely be caught by your wraiths and most likely die from the saves they will then have to take. If the marines survive their saves they must take for becoming fearless, then that is even better than if they had died, because now your wraiths are safely locked in combat where they can’t be gunned down.

For obvious reasons this tactic is not suggested against hordes as you simply will not have enough attacks to kill the enemy and the enemy will have more than enough attacks to kill you.

I hope this tactica has given you some new insights about Necron wraiths.

Since this is the first tactica I have ever written some critiquing would be nice, thanks.

A very good tactica I feel though I will pick up on some points.

Vs. an assualty army using one squad as bait is probably a bad idea as they would get flattened in the CC. They excel at getting into CC with weaker non CC specialist units who simply don't have the ability to kill them before they die.

You haven't mentioned about their ability to move through terrain. Such as hiding them out of LOS on a building then flying through it into assualt.

Also I wouldn't use them as a Bodyguard simply to keep the lord alive as they still die easily, a scarab squad fullfils that role much better than wraiths. Instead you want the Wraiths to help the lord deal more damage.

I used these in a joke list I made ussing CC Necrons. 30 Flayed ones, 20 warriors, 9 wraiths, destroyer lord with rezorb, and some Tomb Spyders. The results were a lot better than I thought they would be.
